Mk3 XR3i and Mk2 XR2 would both make good cheap trackday cars. They actually handle considerably better on track than they do on the road

Daihatsu Charade GTti. Sound great , handling easy to sort with polybush kit for not much dosh. Go like stink with minor mods and sound awesome too.

Can be picked up cheapish even more so if you are handy with spanners. Typical cars get sold with knocking bottom ebd for about £400 which need big end shells replacing. Parts are under £50 and can be done with the engine in situ.

We've just had a roling road session on Sunday at WRC technologies and we have 3 cars all over 150 bhp and I can vouch that a GTti with 150 brake is quicker than an Impreza Turbo ( UK) and I know as I've got an Impreza too !

Mate of mine races his lightened GTti in the Toyo tyres series and a smallish budget and his car was mighty quick. It was only the big budget 205s and the big engined cars like the Starion Turbos and Rover SD1s that gave him any trouble.

If tyou want to build a really quick one theres a guy selling loads of good bits including some superb Ledas for the GTti.

what about maybe a r5 gtt, i have one of these myself. i know people will say about the head gasket and heating problems but with a few minor mods this can all be over come. such as boxing and relocating the filter to behind the head light (which u could remove on the track) rather then having it sit on top of the turbo. also parts for these are so much cheaper now u could have a nice little track car for not alot of money.
mines stripped out, just 2 seats no carpet etc and its great fun, probably dosnt handle as well as a 205 but still a laugh.

Either someone called Rick, or maybe you could move everything but the K to the left and make it look ever so slightly like Gary K

I was passed by a very capable R5 GT turbo in the wet at the weekend ... very impressed.

Ditch the exhaust and fit an S2/Turbo single box, find a late DME whichll fit straight on and give the you an upgrade to the 944-matching late cars. Even better fit the DME and injectors off a 1982 944, which is the crispest of them all. Remove the rear squab and seat back and all of the sound deadening resin and felt and fit one or two light FIA approved Sparcos in place if the original 911 seats. Strip out the electric tailgate openers and roof lifters and window lifting mechanisms (youll have to work out which VAG bits to substitute though...).

I built a hillclimb car ten years about out of a very late series one (1985) 944 and it was superb. I went a little over the top with M030 and a Series 2 dashboard in an otherwise bare interior though. One last tweek is to ditch the spare wheel and to trat the tyres with sealer.....

Of course it's ignored. This is not a car that is living in the "halo effect" like some of the other mentioned in this thread are.

With a little work you'd have a 1000kg 170bhp car - now thats pretty good in anyones books!

In fact if anyone wants to buy a 300bhp 944 Turbo with "halo effect" 968 M030 suspension, I'll buy one just to prove the point!

I seem to recall the AX weighed less than a bag of sand in road trim. Very light motor... admittedly owing to it being constructed out of old kitkat wrappers, but light nonetheless.

AX is a great car, easy and cheap to keep running. and fast as bits for the power it puts out.

I had a GT when I was 18 though so will always have rosy glasses on

650kg and presumably a bit less stripped out. Even with a stock 1.4i (90-odd hp I think) that's not bad.

I think the early, pre 93 cars were the lighter weight ones with 85bhp. the later GTi's came with 100bhp but wern't noticably (much) quicker.... Citroen must have started to use cardboard bodyshells instead of tissue paper

Surely though, a Pug 205 will be a better proposition of on a reasonable budget. As we all know, at our cost, buying the thing isn't the expensive bit.

I'd sooner take a RWD car cheers.

You certainly wouldn't get the brake and sunroof problems you and I have had

Also possibly ignored as in standard trim it's a VW engined 2.0 plug

Much more fun than any 205 imo . And seeing as that one was built by Renault purely for racing it handles pretty well to
