I stuck a Maxi 1850TC engine in a mini once. Made a good 2ltr class hotrod on the local dirt banger/racing track. It would be a bit front heavy for a proper track though

But you are right in saying, you could have almost anything, so long as it was safe.

In fairness I dont think a £1,000 safe track car could exist. Or if it did it wouldnt last long.

Even if you buy a car for £400 you still need to budget for cage, seats, belts, tyres, brakes and keeping it running at a minimum.....

On paper it will look like you can do it, but in practice I would be suprised...

Thats a fair bit of work to get the 944 motor upto 450bhp

I keep getting tempted by the 924 turbos and 2.5 n/a that keep appearing on ebay....

Wait for your headgasket to go, and then get a 3.0 or a 3.2 litre head A good mate of mine has nealy 3.3 litres and is expecting near 500bhp

The 924 Turbos can be pretty troublesome, they don't have the best gearboxes. A 2.5 924 is a good car

The engine to which you refer was actually a DKW/Mercedes engine which came via Auto Union. Not that that matters as the 924S has a Porsche 2500cc engine. Everyone has an opinion about four-cylinder Porsches and theyre mostly crap.

Youll be telling me that they have VW door handles next.....

I wouldnt touch either a Series 1 nor a Series 2 924 Turbo now. I nearly bought the (ex) Earl of March's 924 Carrera GT in 2000 though, before I came to my senses.....

I'm sure most 944 Turbo, S2 and 968 owners will agree with you......the engines are crap.

I think the engines are a bit dull, but they are reliable, powerful and smooth......what more do you want.

...Strange......I used to think you knew what you were talking about.

I was refering to crap/il-informed opinions, rather than crap engines. Even the so-called 'VW van engine' is superb (actually AUDI derived in its last incarntaion), it has a steel crank and rods and its built to extremely close tolerances. Its essentially a standard engine in the 93x cars; the only real differences are the pistons and the sodium filled exhaust valves. Other than that theyre identical in every relative respect even though tthe 93xs were assembled in Stuttgart rather than Neckarsulm (S rather than N in the VIN ).

Its not fantastic grammar is it? It was intended to read: [i]most people have an opinion about four-cylinder Porsches, and those opinions are usually il-informed[\i].

Re the original - Question £1k track car What would you recommend

My brother has recently bought a nice little motor for £950 and is thinking it will be a fun cheap track car.

Its a 94 106 Rallye with a modified saxo VTS motor (cams etc) with 306 gti-6 front brakes and saxo VTS complete rear set up (brakes suspension).

It also has a set of compomotive MO's and a few other bits I can't remember.

I haven't been out in it yet but he said it flies and for the money is a total bargain - must have cost the lad who did the conversion a few quid!

His opinion is that is he tracks it and it gets damaged or breaks - so what the most he can lose is £950

Good call. Pug hatches are a safe bet as they are a great car to begin with.

No matter what you get you have to add:

Cage: £500 ish
Seats: £100 - £500
Harnesses: £100 - £300
Helmet: £100

Then brake pads wear out quickly, tyres.......

If it weren't for my track car I'd be rolling in cash. Worth it though.

If you buy all the stuff new, then Yes.
But its not always the case - see my posts on page 1
"Seats 1 @ £30 (Cobreau GRP) 1 @ £19 (Cobreau Steel frame)
Harness £35 each 4 point
Cage 2nd hand 6 point bolt in £200
Nos - 2nd hand Bike kit £100 - Lightweight + controller £40 twisted sanity
Suspension - Leda 280lb springs & Koni shocks + Koni rears £100 total (barely used)
Quickshift £6
Spare wheels - £50 for 4 speedlines
Slicks £100 full set - ex clio cup series"

I might have sourced a Skip Brown Engine (160bhp) for it now too @ £200

Its keeping the buggers going which is the hard bit. It's ok if you own a garage or are well handy with the spanners but if not, its not a cheap hobby.

Good call, maybe a mk 1 would be better. the mk2's handling is a bit vague. Everyone seems to love the mk1's

I fancy a cheap track car too.

Have been looking around, and I want something with a fair bit of power as I think even a great handling 1.6 Gti, albeit great round corners, would bore me after a couple of days, so am considering Mi16s - they seem to go for anywhere between £2k and £4k - are they reliable? What do I need to look out for?

How about MR2 turbo import? RWD, 220+bhp the 200SX sounds a good bet, but again, hard to get for near £1k. Plus, these may be a little expensive to maintain. Have also considered a cheap old Scooby WRX - reliable enough for track use??

106 Gtis are good, if a little under-powered, but pretty light and quick.

Good thread this, some great ideas so far.

For those who have taken the plunge before now and bought a cheap track toy, how have you found it? Expensive to run or not? Things to look out for?

Whats your budget for a year? Thats the important question

205GTi in standard form parts are cheap as are tyres and pads.

205 Mi16 Been to a good few track days where these have let go

Bigger jap turbo charged cars - parts are more expensive as are tyres and
pads

Vw golf again cheap to run and maintain

Ford of some kind - pretty cheap to run and maintain too.

So the big question isnt so much how much money you have to lay out upfront but how much you have to run it over the course of a season....

yeah mi16 wont last long on the track. next best cost effective option is a 1.9 gti with bike carbs and peugeotsport max torque cam, very cheap and will go well

Default AX!

Well, not as standard.

My FTO was recently written off (old lady pulled into my side). I got a cheap runabout to, well run about in...my budget was £1k. Got a modded AX with a saxo engine in. I feel like one of the "McDonald's rolling on 15's crew", but I have to say it's a good giggle to drive!

http://www.axownersclub.com/phpBB2/v...ic.php?t=10398

I wouldn't like to have a crash in it though. It's all ready for a cage, and wow such cheap insurance. £280 a year! :O

Get down the salvage car auctions, i bought a Saxo VTS afew months ago for £800 just wanted a headlight and grill.
theres always cheap VTR's for around £500 mark, 205 gti's around £100, impreza sports from £300 up. you could get a uk turbo just over a grand.
Thats the way to go for a cheap track car i rekon.

I was briefly reading about this the other day in a mag, this was built for less than 1K, this was all i could find on the web:

Twin Engined 164. A masterpeice of engineering brought to the event by it creater, independent Alfa Romeo specialist Gatwick Alfa.

and they are V6's

I wouldn't **** about myself trying to get something on track for a bag o' sand. Spend 5, and get something different, and decent. My money would go on a 250 HP VAG 1.8T/6sp shoehorned into the back of a 106 or similar. Weighs as much as a fart, and RWD
