I suspect that in the long term if bird flu actually becomes a real threat then we will see the government try to skirt around the cat issue just because of how unpopular such a suggestion would be. My guess is they will cull some rare duck or something, which will have no effect at all on the spread of bird flu into the human population, and ignore the science relating to cats in the name of popularity at the polls.

The actual virus needs to undergo several big mutations before it can make an effective jump into the general human population and because of how it works in cats it is seeming likely that cats will offer it the possibility of making the necessary mutations. Such mutations are unnecessary to infect birds and so it is unlikely that they will occur within the bird population.
In short they'll be about as effective at dealing with a flu outbreak as they were with foot an mouth?

I wonder will they attempt to needlessly cull millions of humans and burn them on a big bonfire before they admit to the cat situation? Knowing the current government and the infulence of the animal rights nutters nothing would surprise me.

At they very least they should be starting to hint that domestic cats should be kept indoors to prevent them eating or coming into contact with birds.

Hey, cut it out.

To date there is no evidence to indicate any connection between bird flu and hedgehogs and so they should be left alone to bumble around in the undergrowth.

Anyone spotting a hedgehog about which they are concerned should feed it hand made truffles from the Chocolate Society and nubile young virgins, they should then retreat to a safe distance and await further instructions.

There is no truth in the rumour that hedgehogs taste just like chicken.

I'd like to point out that those aren't toothpicks, they are electronic counter measures. A hedgehog can go through a speed trap at 150mph and the speed trap doesn't even see it. The spines work sort of like that stealth bomber thing. Woosh, straight though, no one any the wiser.

One more word from you lot and I'll tell the animal rights nutters that you carry out experiments on hedgehogs!

no cats = erm........ no cat ****

BTW - Does anyone know if hedgehogs **** in the garden (or do they carry a small chemical toilet everywhere)
