In my eyes a full re-build means just that! Down to new buckets, valves de-coked and re-ground, new seals, new oil pump, new water pump, honed bores, new rings, decoked pistons etc.
Not just lobbing a few components to replaced damaged ones.
Are we on the same wave length now?

I dont think you'll find many a decent engine builder that wouldn't fit a new oil pump as a matter of course...
The labour of 20 hours is not far off as well... it takes just as long to fit 2 shells as it does a complete rebuild..... unless you know a way of magicing the parts inside the block

jaytc2003,
Just to make things clear, I was not referring to you !
Ok, maybe it's me, I don't know, but I just can't see how you can inspect the damaged parts without stripping the engine first.
To get to the crank/rods/bearings, the cams need to be removed from the heads, the heads need to be un bolted from the block, then the pistons removed, then engine block 1/2's split, then the rods un bolted from the crank, just to see the bearings, rod, and crank damage !!!
Am I missing something ?
The main point of all of this, is if someone wants to make such bold outlandish statements, he should be prepared to justify what he says ! and if he can't, he shouldn't be making the statement in the first place.
Mark.

obviously if cost is a major issue then its understandable if you have to do it.

Hi Mate,
Just to let you know I had a similar problem - threw a con rod
out the side of the block.
Didnt know if to do a rebuild/engine swop etc.
After weeks of opinions searching - various VERY diffferent quotes,
went for a Warranty (start up) engine from Grade A Subaru.
It was a STi RA 96 - for £1000 + VAT - free delivered.
I fitted it myself (am not too bad with a spaner) but never done
an engine swop before - but everyone said the scooby is the
easiest engine to replace - it was replaced over 1 weekend
With help from this forum following a step by step instruction.
I'd go for a spare engine and throw it straight in.
Paul
