But having an extra half a litre of enging capacity is not going to help matters. Still, you don't buy it for fuel consumption, but just I wish they'd quite more realistic figures

I managed 28mpg...once

I love my classic Impreza, but have to say it's hard to argue with this review of the new age one. It seems like one desperate face-lift after another to regain the old status that the original car enjoyed.

That said, I'm sure that it does everything the old car used to on the road.

Yeah spot on, it always get me when people come on here and say stuff like "I love my Impreza, it gets loads of jealous looks"... everyone else is thinking "those arent looks of jealousy"...

But ok, the imagine is horrendous, but when youre flying along a country road or doing a track day with a massive grin on your face, keeping up with cars costing 4 times what the impreza does, who cares what people think of them?!!!

I don't know about this. I wouldn't for minute pretend that everyone likes Scoobies, they don't- some people think they're vulgar...they may be right

However, I can honestly say that my MY99, with it's "tarty" Gold wheels and Dark Blue Mica paint attracts many admiring glances and comments. Maybe its just cause it's in very good condition!

I personally think a classic scooby colour coded and with a sensible spoiler is a handsome car!

I knew someone would say Audi, yes I would buy one if they were in the WRC with a Group A car and if they had an outstanding production car that could be bought.

I loved the old Audi Quattros (Stig Blomquist anyone?) but ever since everything they have made has been soft and "middle class"

True, although I'd take issue with the "soft" - only because of the RS4 (both B6 & B7).....

But I do see your point

What difference does a manufacturer being in the WRC make to a road car?

You may as well say you'd have bought a Xsara because of it's pedigree over the last few years.

Road cars have **** all to do with rally cars.

All I'm seeing here is a group of Impreza owners unable to believe that the game really has moved on. Believe me nobody other than some stinking chavs are looking admiringly at your cars.

Nothing, but that doesn't stop car manufacturers spending billions a year on involvement in motorsport that "sells" their brand.

I couldn't care less who looked at my car, I drive it, I enjoy and I don't need to buy anything for a fashion accessory.

But for £50,000, I'd sacrifice the space and look at 911s.

mixed views on this this and i do agree that the game is moving on as the impreza hasnt really changed dramatically, just the nose really lol, but is still a great car to drive, people will only be laughing from jealousy, fact is they would have an impreza if someone offered them one

i rekon Porches are a bit boring and all look the same (911) but would still have one, wasnt a bad review i think it was honest -

weird looks
cheapy interior
great to drive through twisties
still up there with the best even though they are 4 times as expensive
but starting to fade away now, relik of the 90s

I've just a had a case of Deja Vu - this keeps coming up now.....

What it boils down to is that the Scoob is STILL a great car. Few cars offer the whole package, yadda yadda yadda.

The only downside is that whilst all the manufacturers have upped their game, the competition has significantly caught up (although in fairness, they had a big void to bridge!)

As with most other desirable icons, the Subaru will have a following that some may find undesirable. Get over it - you're being snobs.
Just remember that 13 yrs ago, Subarus were only being bought by the tweed and welly brigade.
Subaru aren't in the business of making exclusive motors - they are in it to make money. Hence, how the car has evolved into it's current state - a car that will appeal to more people as a package
Subaru haven't quite got it right yet (hence the styling revsions everytime you blink) - but they're well on the way (look at the Legacy - highly regarded motor in all respects)

The exact same happened with Ford(XRs & RSs - Focus and Mondeo ST range), Vauxhall (Astra GTEs/SRi etc - VXR).

Mitsubishi and Subaru are the only companies that offer performance cars with AWD Turbo's holomogated from the desire to race their cars. They are the only manufacturers willing to transfer what they do on track to the road. Now that is pedegree. Brand awareness at its best / worst.

I'll list all the other companies for everyones benefit.

Peugeot - GTI's were poor and they've never had a road going version of there rally programe unless I mention the 205 T-16

Citroen - Has anyone driven the C4 VTS? Not a good car.

Skoda - Otavia VRS. A nice car. They should adopt the AWD platform. Its a VW at the end of the day.

Hyundai - Well enough said.

SEAT don't count as they're in F2

Ford - GIVE US ANOTHER COSWORTH!! RS is still in development but as yet not canned. We can put up with the ST's as they're good cars.

Ultimately from the list above only Ford have (in the last decade) had a road car truely related to the WRC programe the rest and probably quite rightly are happy with luke warm badged up special editions rather than the R&D and other associated costs of brining out a true range topper.

In conclusion 5th Gear are quite right with their review of the Impreza but for the money find me one car that gives you so much pleasure per pound. Evo not included. Or Elise.....Or VXR Turbo.... I'm talking about similar cars.

Difference is that the RS4 is still a family saloon (albeit a 50K one!), the Porsche is a 2 seater.

4 seats in a 911, and the rear can take a baby seat - I've tried it.

I think the review was right on the mark, the new front end looks terrible, and my personal opinion is, it looks like a seat front end.

Long gone are the days of the scoobs topping the JD Power awards.

Im into my 5th year of scoob ownership, and to tell you the truth, i hate driving anything else. Ran an my94 import wrx for 4 years, and the only thing that ever broke was the knock sensor, put the ecu into diag mode, fault code 22, was fixed the next day.

How many modern cars can you do that with?

I have an my99 uk spec turbo wagon now, and i am enjoying it just as much, and it's just as reliable.

I liked the shape of the new impreza , but the 06 is for want of a better word, disgusting looking.

But it's everyone to their own.

The truth is that 5th gear actually do like Imprezas. If you recall the test comparison between the STI MY03 (IIRC) and the Evo, they loved the STI.

Now with exception to the controversial looks, the car has only got better as it has evolved (albeit subtly!)

It's the looks that sold me when I saw it in the flesh. But then again I have always liked the Bangle designed BMWs.

The MY06 is a beautiful piece of Italian inspired design.

Edit to add : I just read this after my comment above, ironically the MY06 designer worked for Chris Bangle.

I'm here because I used to own an Impreza, I'm in the process of buying my father an Impreza as a retirement gift and who knows one day I might even buy another for myself.

You might not care less who looks at your car but others here clearly do- and believe me they aren't looking at Imprezas with a jealous or admiring eye, unless of course they are dirtbags.

I'm certainly not denying Imprezas are good at what they do, what they don't do however is what many people want from a car. Namely feel like a premium product, engender respect from others (which is shallow as **** but many people seem to like that sort of thing) or even impress other petrol heads.
The cars feel cheap and nasty inside, look like they were styled by a blind man and the perceived quality is low. In this day and age these qualities aren't acceptable in a car costing the best part of 30k.

On the flip side of the coin a 15K car from motorpoint or similar with a £600 remap offers value for money that can't be ignored. I'd take a 15K wrx over it's competitors any day.

What are you even on this site kiwi?

Basically because I am enthusiastic about Imprezas/Subaru. I can't see the point of being here otherwise.

If I didn't like them or wanted to slag them off I wouldn't be spending all my time being negative on here, I'd be on another car forum where I could be positive about the cars I actually like.

Talking about Fifth Gear, did anyone see it last night with that valeter guy who use wax that costs £6000 for a tub

It was also mentioned that he can charge up to £5000 to clean a car.

WOW, is all I have to say!!

Yep, damn right. It would be a very boring and sad world if we all liked the same thing. I love the Subaru and always have and now that I'm in a position to buy one I didn't hesitate in ordering one straight away. I've never had a problem with the looks of the thing either. I even liked the bugeye, it just took some getting used to for me. The MY06 car, for me, is the best looking yet (and I'm not saying that just because I've ordered one). It's contemporary and aggressive looking IMO.

I still like the look of the classic although it beginning to show its age now.

Even if I didn't like the look of the Scoob I can honestly say I would still buy one for its sheer ability on the road.

RABID, I reckon you definately are.

What's the matter did you get a bad trade in price or something?

Don't know where you get the idea that people look at Scoobies in disgust, and I don't reckon people are jealous! I do think that the people who glance at my scooby do so because they are car fans and know of Subarus rally success and the fact that CM and RB drove them giving them an extra reason to be interested and that's the same reason I like them so If I have a smile it's because I'm reminded I made a good choice. Peoples feelings about how the car looks are objective so lets leave that one to the individual. Over rated? no way! There reputation for reliability well IIRC, one year - JD survey 1&2 for Legacy and Impreza.

I will also add that I think the 5th Gear review is fair and agree that the 06 facelift is 1 too many! I do think it is time to move the Impreza on a bit. It's a great car but to remain a great car we needed something new not a facelift. Lets hope Subaru are listening to the press and visiting SN and SIDC.

PS Rabid have you tried anger management? just a thought!
