Had the Z3M and sold it for the scoob the first time I caught my reflection with the roof down. However I did try a Z4 but IMHO they are really tacky inside....Corsa style plastic......

Great build, great handling the stock z4 is a great car and i would have one over an MX5 and i like the MX5 to drive.
As for image
Audilover - Audis generally bought by those who aspire to a BMW or just want to be different but do not have the money to do it properly or is that a general thoughtless stereotyping by me
Drive a volvo - thats an old mans car innit - or am i stereotyping again

I dont care about BMW's image. Id drive one without a second thought. The Z4 however is so ugly.
What I said was going purely by looks. Im sure the car is good but it looks crap, especialy the poverty spec versions.
How can anyone who drives an Impreza slag off a BMW's interior quality
A Volvo S40????
And your sayin a Z4 looks crap???

Had a bit of a blast with one of these the other daycoming out of chelmsford and it sounded very rattly, also quite a bit slower than i was expecting.I think id go and look at the ZM instead.
Ive heard a few of them up close and when they floored it they all seemed to have a horrible rattling noise .Anyone know the rough weight of these cars?

Oddly enough, everyone I know also thinks they look great, rather than "most".

I think the "ugly" bit about the Z4 can be said across the full BMW range now with the Bangle designed cars.
You either get it or you dont.
Personally i like them, they have grown on me.But all good cars that seem to go out on a limb are like that..
We could say the 911 is ugly,or the countachThere both unusual in there design, but hold that wow factor..

I definately don't like the M6 front end and detest the 7 series rear end, yet the 1 series works IMO.

I drove the new MX5 with the 2 litre engine last night and have to say I really loved it!
I've always been a fan of the MX5 but found I was too tal for them at 6ft4 however I got into the new one quite comfortably.
The 2litre engine in the MX5 works very well as well, there was plenty of power for the size and weight of the car, i'd choose one over the Z4 personally, especially with the price difference

My wife has bought an MX5 2.0l sport recently and I drive it every now and again. I also test drove the Z4 when I was looking to change my car.
Note. I have only driven the 3.0l Z4
Looks are subjective so I won't comment.
Interior - the Z4 is quite bland but the quality is better than the MX5 (think the MX5 looks better). Both BM's that I drove were circa 3 years old with 20k on the clock and had no rattles.
The trim materials can only be described as average at best in the MX5.
Performance - the 3.0l Z4 is quite a bit quicker in a straight line. The 5 is no slug when worked but it would get left by the Z4.
Handling - They are prettly similar. The MX5 we have have has LSD and traction and handles well though is a little soft at the back when pushed.
Gearbox - the 2 Z4's I drove both had quite poor gearchanges compared to the MX5, very notchy.
Roof - the MX5 is manual but I can put it up and down from within the car easily (and quicker than the Z4's automatic action). The Z4 is obviously easier though.
The Z4 is much better insulated which reduces noise quite abit over the 5. There is also more head room.
Don't think the roof is automatic on all Z4 models.
Boot - Massive on the Z4 compared to the 5 - could not belive how big the boot actually was (fit suitcases in there).
Cost - we got a new Launch edition for less than we could have got the 3 year old Z4 for (the Z4 would have had sat nav but similar spec otherwise e.g. heated leather). Depreciation will be more on the 5 though so the true cost is pretty similar.
Fun Factor - whilst not as quick, the MX5 just seems more fun to drive of the 2 cars. I actually really like it.
If it had been my choice I would have got the S2000
