Best advice would be to get a nail of an old car and learn to drive it, as has already been said. You might have the car handling skills of Schuey, but I know that I didn't have as much road sense or control of the Red Mist that I have now...
My first car was the same as Gary C's - a shoveit. Crap, but it was a car and I loved it to bits. Could get the rear out on wet roundabouts if you tried
