do they? most people would race at 120mph+ on public roads if they felt it quiet enough? i would doubt it.

out of interest....would you do that with a kid in the car (child/neice/whatever?) Just wondering if you feel its all perfectly safe or if you do it because you feel the danger doesnt extend beyond that to yourself?

The bottom line is, anyone with half a brain will never push there car to the limit on a public road while in a "race" with another driver. Im not saying they wont drive it hard, but just not as hard as they would on a track. Its just far too risky, u are going round blind corners etc with no idea what might be there ie, a broken down car, a horse, cyclists, children.........the list go's on.
So really u cant compare two cars on a country road as one driver might be quite simply far more sensible than the other.
Driving fast on you're own and being in a "race" are totally different matters.

I never drive too close to my or the car's limits on the roads - I will never go round a blind bend too fast, always be able to stop/avoid within the space available, all risks are minimised as far as they can be whilst driving at speed sir

You're missing the point mate. U take two drivers in a race on a public road- Driver A beats Driver B, because he is willing to takes bigger risks (that does'nt mean he is a better driver). U then go on a track and Driver B wins quite easily because he is now in the right environment.

I know so many people who constantly look for races on the road and then say "oh i beat this car and that car, im such a good driver & i really know how to bring out the best in my car" and i always reply by asking "what happend to you're previous 4 cars?" to which they normally say "oh i bent it in two, it was'nt my fault though".

What impresses me about remapped VAG 1.8T's is the torque curve - most look like Table Mountain

No not everyone will got to a ton twenty and there are those that won´t get involved but I assure you many of the respected members of this board will engage in fast road driving and encounters with other vehicles. I can´t name names as that isn´t fair but I some of the fastests drives I´ve been on have been with people who you´d think butter wouldn´t melt in their mouth

Doesn't make it right though. Sulli goes to great lengths to explain how careful he is whilst he is engaging in a highly illegal and dangerous activity (no not homosexuality you pervs! ). Street racing gives the participants an incredible adrenaline rush which often becomes addictive, objectivity is never given a second thought in these testosterone filled duels. Some posters say they only do it when it's quiet and it's a straight stretch of road (pardon the innuendo!) and are always fully in control, but no-one will admit to having deficiencies in their driving. Bottom line(!) no matter how under control you think things are, street racing is dangerous and illegal. It has it's own penalty more severe than other motoring offences.
If you must race confine it to the track and when your adrenaline levels return to normal resume your driving on the road.

Don't take a great driver to win a duel on a dual carriageway (why do you think it's called a 'duel carriageway' )- mainly just straight line speed, like I described. No pedestrians, no other cars, not much danger really. I appreciate the thoughts of endangering other motorists/pedestrians/horses????, and I don't think anyone wants to do that. Most of us have these little tangles where it's relatively safe.
Always makes me laugh all this talk of scoobies on the 'twisties' - by definition this is where you're most likely to round a bend and encounter a horse/pedestrian/family with push-chair!! That's something i never do if I can't see far enough ahead.
I care too much about my own mortality to endanger myself too much, and so don't, and don't endanger anyone else.
I am happy to race on a track too, can't afford to as much as i'd like and will always have a go on the road too if appropriate. I make all efforts to remain safe, as well as following most advice contained in Roadcraft.
