The neighbours normally complain about the missus coming, but that's a totally different thread...

I always stop & wait for a couple of mins before pulling into the road I live (if late at night). I have heard my exhaust note from inside my house & I can understand that it could be a nuisance. The car is parked at the back of the drive so it has the effect of amplifying the exhaut note as well.

At the end of the day you could end up squabbling over a minor issue (bearing in mind the steps you could take with suggestions in the replies above) but if the db level is within legal limits there is not a lot they can do.

As I am interested
Does anyone know what the legal side is after 11:00pm. Would the noise level still be okay even though its within the correct db levels? I remember sitting outside McDonalds one night & my mate tooted my horn & I got into a lot of trouble with the copper that was standing nearby.

Andy.

Idiots.

One man's "inconsequential matter" is another man's grounds for diminished responsibility.

Gob$hite replies like f#ck 'em and such are the reason why UK society is in the state it's in. I have my rights, no responsibilies and bugger everyone else.

This guy lives in a semi. There is no way he wants to go to war with his semi attatched neighbours.

As somone pointed out above, chances are they work shifts and are getting woken by your noise.

Just apologise. Go round and tell them you've done (whatever) and ask them is that any better? If not, ask when is the time they most likely to be disturbed and so on. Make a big effort to be "going down on them" to help. Ask'em round for a beer, suggest you go in their house with a bottle of wine to see what it sounds like etc. Offer them a drive, so you can see what it sounds like when they park on their drive. And while your at it, offer to feed their pets when they can't get home in time or whatever. That should shame them into apologising for putting you out over something so neighbourly.

You only live once. What's the use in going round telling everyone who speaks to you to go f#ck themselves?

No life is definately too short.

LOL!

You should leave that kind of activity to behind closed doors and then you won't get into trouble!

Hey BarryK lighten up it's Friday...

I'm sure anyone can vent as they wish in this forum it doesn't mean they act like that in a real situation...

Life's too short to have a lack of humour...

Cool

Yes, but this is not a joke. And life is not a practice. You have to live with consequences of your actions.

Oh it's Friday, so we can all bring our games into work and all our customers won't mind being ignored. Cos after all, hey it's Friday and they can go screw themselves.

Nah, it doesn't work like that.

The only time I ever idle my turbo is when I pull straight off the motorway into services. Sitting on the drive every night cooling it off sounds like total paranoia/overkill to me.

The world is a terrible place, life is bad... etc. but this is a forum not limited by the confines of meat space. My comment was people can suggest what the hell they want on here. I'm sure if someone recommended he bugger their dogs to death he wouldn't do it...

How you act in the real world is different! I'm off out now to punch a Nun

Exclamation

ROTFLMAO @Tarmacterrorist. No-wonder the cop lost it if you where doing that in a Mickey D's carpark. Seriously though, it is an offence to sound your horn in a built up area after 9.00 PM. You should only ever use your horn to warn other drivers of your presence if you believe a dangerous situation could occur if you don't alert them to the fact, so I'm afraid tooting at the chicks is a no no at any time of day.
EU production limits are a lot lower than enviromental health limits. Many performance cars and bike will have a flat spot between 5000 and 5500 RPM. This is one of the engine speeds where the noise test is carried out. The same limits don't apply to after sales upgrades, so things can get a lot noisier.

p.s. I would completely disregard BarryK's advice.

Guess it all depends on having anything else done guys, if its just a S/Sport rear box or the mid pipe and downpipe too with no Cats ... I had it all done and the noise level was too high and i can understand the complaints. Since then i had the equal manifold and its all quieter again.
I also added a different mid section to the S'Sport one without Cat. I put on a Power Eng mid section with sport cat and it still sounds a bit but it is now legal on the MOT test according to the dyno readouts.
So if you are noisy try a Cat mid section and they might not get ****ty anymore.
cheers

Then again, they work shifts, so does it matter what you do? Or even what car (or exhaust) you have?

Chances are they'll be trying to sleep when you get home.

All you can do is be reasonable - don't let it idle for too long on the drive etc.

Don't fall out with your neighbours. My other half had to sell her property because of noisy neighbours that had her in tears every day - once you notice a repetitive noise from next door, it bugs you. and bugs you. and bugs you until you go stark stir crazy.

Oh, and when I (6'5") popped round to ask them to politly keep it down once, I was threatened with legal action for intimidating behaviour.

Life is far far far too short. Make friends.

I had something similar with my neighbours well, one in particular who made few sarcastic remarks about the noise when leaving for work at 6.30am every morning. Nothing heavy but enough to get the point made. I had a SS DP, standard CS and Magnex oval BB. I went to Long Life exhausts and had a back box custom made to reduce the noise at idle but preserve the "symphony" when pushing on. They stuffed extra wire wool etc in the BB and it was quieter. I then asked my neighbour in front of our other neighbours at a party if she noticed any difference in the noise levels lately to which she replied "no". I then explained in great detail the efforts and cost I went to in getting an alternative BB etc etc which caused her some embarrasment. I then offerred to change it again but she insisted I didn't as she "certainly didn't expect me to go to all that trouble in the first place". The backbox has got louder as it has bedded in and I also fitted the Magnex resonator centre section to complete the system. Now I have what I want and a happy and appreciative neighbour.

Moral of the story:- Keeping neighbours on side is hugely important especially if you have kids. An inconsiderate neighbour is everyone's nightmare. We love our cars but there has to be a happy medium as long as all parties are reasonable. I also have two police officers next door who acknowledge the burble but have never complained but they are absolutely sound.

The ideal of course would be a two tone exhaust so you could hit a switch to engage cats when required. Didn't the Mitsubishi GT3000 have something like that?

Just my twopenneth worth.

Dont even start me on noisy neighbours. I like dance music but from 6pm to 10am louder than my TV will go!!! He owns the other semi(attached to mine) Stopped since i threatened him with his life, but even if he has it at a reasonable level i feel like killing him!! Once you hate the noise once it gets to you everytime you hear it - even if its at a OK level. As they are Police your really a bit fecked m8. Dont get on the wrong side of them - it aint worth it.

Thanks to you all for your differing responses.

I should point out that I've never said a word when they've strolled in at 4 in the morning after their shifts and driven their car on to their drive which is completely covered with stone chips. They make a hell of a noise and I've never once said a word even though its woken me up more than once. To put this in context we're talking of a minutes worth of mild 'rumble' here. When you look at the world today you have to think, jesus - get a life.

There is definately a case of the green eyed monster here as they have copied a number of things that we have done to our house recently - weirdos.

They are a bit funny and I'll be staying clear. If they want a fight then fine, they're only PCs and I have some friends much higher up in the Police than that. Also if I get pulled over around town within the next two weeks I'll be straight on to the Police Complaints Commission to ruin their careers.

I actually tried to reverse in tonight as suggested, but because the drive is so tight I ended up making more noise than usual adjusting the line of the car, whoops.

I'll let you know of any developments.

Cheers again.

Have to say that I asked my neighbours on both sides if they minded if my car got a bit louder. They were quite happy so I got a SS BB, then asked them a few months later if they minded if my car got even louder. No came the responce so I now enjoy the noise of a full decat SS system with no resonator in the centre.

Must admit that although they say they don't mind I try and get in and out of the garage/drive as fast as possible and as quiet as possible (not easy when cold). And I try not to run the car after 10pm or before 8am.

Lifes to short to upset other people and for those of you that sparked off at BarryK's comments. I'm sorry you own Scoob's. I thought Scooby owners were a considerate bunch, who only happen to drive a bit faster than everyone else. Guess not Shame....

1 min of mild noise and they complain. How sad is that?
Ask them whats REALLY troubling them.
