If it was worth doing SUBARU would have done it for you!!
It isn't, so they haven't!!
Why? Because it makes the car unreliable, thats why!!
I cannot understand people wanting to turn a Scooby into a TVR in reliability terms??

Someone who works for Subaru, when questioned about the remap, told me there was no need to do this for all European '02 Sti's and on. I took his word for it and as stated earlier I have not had a probelm with mine

IMHO if you're not going to get the ECU remapped it's a waste of time doing a full decat..!
Do it and with the 50+ bhp (and vastly improved drivability) you should get with a decent map you WON'T regret the cost..
BTW those that talk of myths and cocklinks have obviously never had a car mapped..!

Now let me qualify the following from the outset by saying that ScoobyClinic are the experts, I'm most certainly NOT. Also I've heard nothing but glowing praise for them and quite fancy a visit there myself.
The poster has a JDM import STi, correct? They are mapped for higher octane fuel than we have in the UK, correct? Now he is asking about a modification that will cause the car to run leaner i.e. decat, correct? And he is saying they told him this was fine on this 10 year old JDM car and didn't even advocate that he get a boost guage or knocklink? Is he sure that they weren't generally referring to UK cars of the same year? UK cars do generally run without issue on a decat, so it's not necessary, but is a good idea if you want the best gains. As an aside, I didn't think you could remap cars of that year, I thought it was a case of either a daughter board(?) soldered onto the ECU or an aftermarket ECU mapped to suit.
I'd be interested in hearing from SC on here about this.....I just get the feeling the poster might have got the wrong end of the stick somewhere.

"Well, you all know what I think ................
Re-mapps are an expensive, VERY expensive, waste of money ....... now they wear DetCans to try and make it look ever-so special and high tech. its utter bollox - change a few streams of DATA in the ECU Map?? **** easy with a laptop and correct lead and program.
Shouldn't cost more than £30 ..... and thats the truth!!
Pete"
So glad i use the ignore function cos you so clearly know dick all about tuning mate

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that you can't just change parameters on the ECU on the fly - surely you need to upload a whole new map via the OBDII port . That means that you need a base map to start off with and that's where an amateur would begin to have problems. Once you have a reliable base map, I expect you would also need a fair bit of knowledge to know what to tweak and by how much and of course to know that the map is eventually powerful enough for the customer and safe so it won't lean out and melt the pistons and the tuners reputation at any point.
Personally I wouldn't buy a second-hand decatted impreza that hadn't been remapped too, anymore than I would want a beastie that has a dawes fitted, but maybe that's just me being over-cautious.

I'll repeat what I said earlier, as people seem to of miised it.
Early STi i.e STi 1 and STi RA would be of concern due to them running quite lean as standard. STi 2, UK and WRX Pre96 would be fine IMHO as they run quite rich.
UK 97 - 00 also run quite rich.
Can't comment on WRX or STi 97 - 00 as I've never seen a map from these.
01> should be fine due to the advanced ECU, but keep an eye on boost spikes.
Benefits are to be had with a remap, but most of this comes from raised boost and optimised timings/fueling.
Do it if you can afford it, but don't worry if you can't

JDM sti v3 full decat
Having read all the threads and just had the downpipe replaced what are the chances of overboost or fueling problems with my car?
It is running a standard ECU (i think , please advise what is std and i will have a look), k&n induction kit, magnex up pipe and now 3" downpipe coupled to 3" hks system.
I havn't give it too much right foot yet as you guys have me worried now!
I have a lamco gauge set fitted with boost only capable of reading to 1.2 bar i think.....
Advice welcome...
