Sara, sorry but I thought the same thing, I wouldnt have posted it but seeing as its out in the open, cant help what I thought initially, however its your choice, people on here do plenty of dangerous and self destructive stuff worse than a couple of sessions on a sunbed, I think the link is between your mum being ill and the 'link' between tanning and Melanoma's, its just a very simple link wheras if you had said you eat red meat a lot (linked to bowel cancer) nobody would have batted an eyelid. You gotta go sometime you cant never do anything, lifes a gamble every day.

Still not sure about having a tan, sure you look healthy for a week or two after but sunbeds can be addictive, I know 30 year olds that have been at it or years and its starting to show, you get used to being that colour, just go on your hol pale and interesting, get a bit of natrual sunlight in small safe doses, perhaps sit out this week its lovely weather.
