Well it is the middle of the night - I couldn't sleep so have spent the last hour finally researching memory foam mattresses.
For a topper the consensus would seem a 7cm layer is what you need - indeed even the most expensive mattresses would seem to rely on a memory layer of 7cm.
So if you have a decent mattress (we have a two year old ViSprung which is very high quality just too firm) then a topper would seem to be the way to go.
Body Impressions Night Therapy with hypoallergenic treatment topped out the Which magazine test and would seem to the be the best balance of price and quality. They are definately at the quality end and have higher density foam than others - they are also 7cm thick which is the right thickness for a therapeutic response. They do a 4cm topper as well which is quite a bit cheaper.
There certainly seemed to be consistent price levels for quality of foam and thicknesses (except for Tempur which were much more expensive).
The cheapest I found for this model in King Size is bedstar.co.uk who are actually very near where I live. The topper is £249 delivered and is sent out from stock so a pretty quick delivery time is promised - hope to have it by the weekend.
Will update with reports of sleeping on it at the weekend hopefully.

PS Sara if you would like to come and try it just let me know

i found this when i was looking for a topper.....
***2" or 50mm of Visco Elastic foam provides superb comfort and support - thinner isn't enough and thicker certainly isn't better and in some cases seems to decrease support!
The density of the foam is 55kg per cubic metre.
Uncovered foam applied directly to the mattress is best. The foam is naturally non slip and stays put on top of the mattress. You can use the same matress protection regime as you do currently, mattress cover, sheets, funny furry thing etc. Visco foam is naturally anti bacterial and hypo allergenic.
These matress toppers are made of precisely the same material as others sold in shops, on TV and on the internet. They are the best product we can supply and we will guarantee to refund your money if you return them when you are not satisfied.
You can turn a poor mattress into a luxury one or improve the feel of any mattress.****
it looks like all i need is 2". kingsize £85 delivered with 2 free pillows

I am intrigued when it says the material is precisely the same as the material used by others as if you analyse them they vary greatly with different densities and properties.
In terms of size the majority of those supplied in a therapeutic context are 7cm.
It certainly is a very good price and if you have a non-saggy bed I am sure it can only improve it - I look forward to hearing how it performs.

Ours was from www.cpsoffers.co.uk it cost £85.00 plus postage, £95.00 in total. It's on a 30 day money back guarantee but I don't think it'll be going back somehow.
I can't imagine why anyone would need to pay over the odds for this type of thing. At this price, I can afford to replace it when I feel it needs renewing .
Sweet dreams all round.

the guy in that order is the same guy as on ebay, with free pillows etc, but looks a tadge cheaper, the advert is word for word at least.
Can you pm a report after a couple of days use cos just under 90 sheets will do whereas a bag of sand is a crippler, nice

comes from your mattress and ultimately from the spring. Therefore it is advisable to have a good spring for the memory foam to go on to. The foam will mold to your body and feel like you are sleeping on air only if the spring doesn't sag. Memory foam can be incorporated into any spring ie open coil or pocket sprung with pocket sprung being the best. Ultimately as the old cliche goes you get what you pay for!

I am not for one moment suggesting it is not a great product - just make sure you put it on top of a decent mattress.

my mattress is a Chartwell...
it has 1000 pocketed springs, it has an insulator, medium density foam, white cotton felt, each spring reacts independentaly, moulding to the shape of your body, side stitched boarder for long lifeshape retention.

its difficult enough getting up in the morning as it is

i will wait for all the feedback on the toppers then i will decide

Three years is nothing! Barely bedded in then. Make sure you turn it regularly or get a big strong man to do it for you as I know how heavy these mattresses are!
