Its a completely different car in terms of performance and engineering.
These are the most advanced impreza's out there, they have stronger engines, better ecu's, more toys (elec folding mirrors for instance and quick rack steering) twin scroll turbo which in addition to the AVCS (active valve control system) gives you power from like 1500rpm to the red line.
You can tune these cars to 360bhp and 380+lbs of torque on the standard engine, you need to replace a few bits if you want to do that on a uk car
the only "so called down side" is that you dont get the burble, oh well, prefer the rocket sound my twin scroll makes over the burble anyway

Basically the JDM car includes several years' further engine and drivetrain developmet compared to the UK car - something to do with EU type approval, I think. It's around 300bhp out-of-the-box, which puts it on a par with the PPP in terms of power, but there's nothing stopping you from doing a similar exhaust swap and remap which would give around 340bhp on the Japanese model. Ask Iain about the 'Type 20' conversion for JDM cars if you're interested, it keeps the warranty.
The JDM car also comes better equipped too - HID lights, quick steering rack, electric folding mirrors, automatic I/C water spray and other details. There's some pictures here.

.if the wr1 is sold then i'll defo look at a JDM import.are the service intervals the same as a uk car or like the wr1 where it needs an interim service at 5k/6months??

I'd choose a JDM import if I was in your position. If you choose a UK model I think you'll find the insurance is cheaper for the WR1 against a STI with PPP, it was for me when I had a look online.
