Formula 1 commentators - why?

Einstein.
Nothing to do with being popular. I don't however support someone who is prepared to drive another off the road and break his car so that he can win the World Championship by default after he had made a mistake and gone wide on a corner. Or "brake test" another driver for no apparent reason.
My long experience in track racing was when there was a proper sporting spirit and to win you had to outdrive the others fairly and you could expect fair treatment back as well.
In my opinion there is no room for deliberate dangerous driving in motorsport which is what this kind of thing amounts to. I was disgusted to see another driver deliberately drive into the rear of another car twice yesterday during the BTCC racing in order to push him off so that he could overtake. The chinless observers put it down as a "racing accident"!
Maybe you like to watch crashes rather than motor racing. In that case you would do better to watch banger and stock car racing which would be more your style in that case.

I much prefer the commentators who have actually been there and done it so to speak, and Martin Brundle is a good example. Unfortunaely they often seemed to get teamed with others who just shout a lot but don't really seem to have any real understanding of what they're talking about, James Allen being an example.
The one who I really can't stand is on BSB, called Barry Nutley I think, who just shouts in a REALLY annoying voice for no reason, whilst completely missing all the important stuff happening on screen.

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks like that then, for what it's worth I completely agree with you on that point Les

I now turn the sound off and listen to R5 with David Croft and Maurice Hamilton, so I don't have to listen to Allen.
It's a shame that they've lost the bloke who used to be Jordan's Commercial Director (Ian ?) this year. And during practice they have Anthony Davidson who puts Brudle in the shade

Well I did mention Schumacher's sporting ethics earlier in this thread.
|I have no complaint at all about the commentating, and James Allen is certainly not a "tit". That is very unfair to him.
What really annoys me is the "artistic" actions of the camera work director when they keep thinking they have to show us pictures of people standing about in the pits when we could be seeing the actual racing!

Are those who run him down able to describe to us exactly what makes James Allen a "tit" in their estimation. And can you nominate a better commentator?
