Being quite an avid reader of a good cross section of books, I read The da Vici Code and not very far into it thought I was reading a film script. I think that's why people say the book is crap. It's written in a very bland fashion as though the author is aiming it directly at the movie industry. Just begun to read Angels & Demons, and that again is written in the same style.
I don't expect anything different when I go see the film (eventually), as said above, there'll be bits missing and extra bits put in for visual effect, but not a lot else.
Bottom line, a jolly good yarn, spolit by the manner of telling.

Colleague saw it, she said the book was an entertaining holiday read, but the film was utter crap.

Never read the book, but the film was pretty average. It's a good bit of fiction, but I saw nothing that would make me suddenly give up (or take up) and form of religious views.

It's a bit slow and tiresome and doesn't inspire any real excitment. Don't go expecting an Indiana Jones yarn

Wait for it to come out on DVD.

Saw it last night. I enjoyed the book - hardly prizewinning lieterature but it flowed well and made a good read - but I thought the film, at least for the first third or so, was hard to watch. There were too many rapid shot changes, too many flashy angles and so on that it made the whole thing seem rather disjointed.

Tom Hanks is totally the wrong actor for the part, I feel. Wrong look, wrong voice, wrong everything. But that's the trouble with a book adaptation - the characters rarely, if ever, look the way your imagination saw them whe you read the part. The only exception I can think of is Snape in the Harry Potter films. He was always Alan Rickman in my mind...

Anyway, on balance I'd say it was an OK film but not a keeper. Though Audrey Tautou was ever so nice to look at
