I don't consider myself a boy racer, at 25 i still struggle to get insured. I have 2 children and a g/f and pootle from place to place, no points on my licence, never had an accident where i was to blame. I do however enjoy opening the WRX up a bit when some *** is giving it, when i am on my own in the car.
I wouldn't do it on a busy road, or dodge in and out of traffic to get ahead.
Its not irresponsible, its what the cars were made for, sorry but why buy a quick car unless you intend to use it. As far as a status symbol, i paid £2700 for mine and love the thought of people paying £20k for something that can't keep up with me. I enjoy a bit of competition even if i lose (bloody S2000, see post) and i think you'll find most people just do it for the adrenaline.
If your not endangering anyone, whats the harm ? And if its about reputation i'd rather as a scooby owner have a reputation for having the nerve to use it rather than bottling it. If you enter a race you put yourselves at risk, but you do that whenever you choose to cross a road.
I drive a sprinter van for a living and see a lot of terrible drivers. A few weeks ago i was trailing a long queue of cars in the right hand lane all waiting for the person at the front to move over. Just in front of me was gleaming EVO VIII and he was revving the nuts out of it in frustration through a massive backboxHe was literally a metre behind the car in front. I sat waiting thinking once a gap opens he'll be off , but he just sat at 80mph in the right hand lane. So i flashed him and he moved over, and i overtook.
Later that evening i was asked to see the manager, he had recieved a call from a member of the public saying they had taken down my registration as i was doing 80mph+ on a 3 lane motorway.
I know the speed limit, but i also know someone in an EVO must get very frustrated at the thought of being overtaken by a sprinter.
My manager laughed and threw the complaint in the bin.

I'm all for enjoying your car's performance. It would be silly to pay sky high insurance and running costs to drive around in a way that would be achieveable in a 1.3 Fiesta! However, I'm with Bubba, predominantly, it's best to do that in a non-competitive way on the road!
If you simply must rise to every perceived challange on the road, regardless of how inappropriate participating may be then you have to ask if you're *really* the kind of person who should own a performance car! I would argue the answer is a most definate "no".

Now that I own one it dosent mean I'm gonna rag the crap outa it and end up in a ditch or in cuffs with the fuzz. I've just spent a wad load of cash on a new toy and dont plan on destroying it.
More to the point, I like cruising around at 'normal' speeds knowing that other people know its a performance car and dont mess with you. There is nothing better than sitting at the traffic lights with a Nova sat next to you jam packed with 'diamond geezers' decked out with a big body kit, big exhaust and neon lights like a big christmas tree. Theyre all looking at your car. The light goes green and you effortlessly leave them clearly in your rear view mirror.
Its a pride thing, a show-off thing. Whatever you want to call it, its you enjoying your pride and joy.
But yes we all floor it now and again, why not? Let that kitten under the hood growl a little. Besides, 130mph on the motorway at the dead of night isnt too bad....is it?

Just to say, I didn't really mean that all CTR drivers and half of scooby drivers are imbeciles. That was just a flippant, outrageous statement to counter the silly sweeping generalisation in the thread title, and get some debate going.
I reckon 99% of the perceived "challenges" on the road are confined to the driver's mind. I don't think I've EVER been "challenged" by a CTR driver on the road, and I've been driving my scoob over three years.

If you were ever to come across a supercharged CTR or one with a 2.2 Toda stroker kit I'm sure that the race would come out very differently.
Not saying that the CTR would win but you would have a major fight on your hands.
I know of one CTR running a Jackson Racing S/C (@9psi) along with IPS S/C cams, Toda 4-2-1 manifold, Gruppe M induction etc etc that makes 320 at the fly or around 280 at the wheels.
This car is seriously quick.
Or could always pop along to TDI North and ask Paul Jones to take you out in his Toda spec CTR that's pushing out 302BHP at the fly in NA tune.
I'm sure your perceptions of this car would change in an instant.

IMHO, much over 200bhp in a FWD car just doesn't work effectively, it'll be super quick once rolling (although I've seen some highly tuned FWD cars break traction in 2nd and 3rd in the dry!!!) but throw in bumps, bends and wet surfaces etc... and they go to pieces! Fun, yes, but the truth is there are much better ways to deploy high power.
But we digress, no-one is doubting that the CTR is a quick car or that it can be tuned to be quicker; this is about challenges on the road!
There are a few things you have to bare in mind when you think you're being challenged:
1) Some people drive like ***** regardless of what's around them - you could be driving a Milkfloat and they'd still try it on!
2) Some people might just want to get where they're going quicker than you and not mean it as a "may car is better than yours" statement.
3) Some people that may seem to be exhibiting challening behaviour may simply have got lost/in the wrong lane etc
4) Would you still think they were challenging you had you been driving a Fiesta? Or are you just expecting it because of what you drive?

I'm sure you can read. I just admitted that I go for blasts, but I'm not interested in how fast my car is compared to someone else's.

I have nothing to proove. Be it who has teh faster car, or who is teh faster driver.
Even was when I was driving the NSX and had a Ferrari 360 behind me and I thought "I wonder if...." But I resisted and kept well below three figures, and the gent in the Ferrari gave a freindly wave and didn't even try to hassel me Like me, he had nothing to proove. He knows how fast the car is and is perfectly content with that.
Driving fast on a public road isn't about how fast your car is, it's how much bottle you have to keep your foot down and how late you can leave the braking for whatever bend/roundabout/pedestrian that is in the way The winner is usually the one who has more stupidity

The car in question does 60 in the mid 5's which is very impressive stuff for a car putting down that kind of power through the front wheels, and once rolling it pulls very hard.
Have a little read about the car in question HERE

I'm not doubting that a Scoob has more cross country pace than the CTR and IMHO the Scoob is always going to be the more capable car for obvious reasons.
Basically what I was trying to say was in reference to the original post of 'Why do CTR's always try it on?' as it seemed to me as if the guy was trying to say 'Why do they even bother?'.
The point I was trying to convey was do not doubt the ability of these cars to carry serious speed and in the right hands prove a handful for a Subaru.
But it's Scoob for me all the way (now anyway) that's why I'm part exin my CTR in for one

Before my 03 MY WRX with PPP i owned a CTR.The CTR is a very capable 2.0 N/A car producing nearly 200BHP as standard and are just over 1200KG.I really did enjoy mine and found it quite cheap to run, a bit of a 'rollerskate' car a great alrounder. My only dislike of the CTR is that is Front wheel drive with no LSD, very disappointing as traction can be lost very easily in the wet or on uneven surfaces causing the front wheel to spin Very few engine problems are reported compared with the impreza.I certainly wouldn't have a problem owning another as they are great cars for the money.

CTRs always try their luck for the very same reason we try it on with 911s (at least of us who have modded), we want to slay a giant or just see how quick our cars are.
Pathetic nonetheless but one of the side effects to being full of testosterone.

Theres probably a thread titled ' why do subaru's always try it on??', on a porsche forum somewhere!!
The reason is probably down to people being interested in seeing how their car compares against a motor that they would like to have themselves, but for one reason or another, cannot have.
