Top Gear give the manufaturers one thing that advertising does not allow - the ability to show their cars driven at high speed.

Car advertising is very restricted in this area, hence many companies enter motorsport (touring cars, F1 etc etc). The type of coverage they get from Top Gear and other car programs could not be achieved through any other medium.

But they have to be responsible, and therefore the high speed stuff is very track orientated, while out on the roads they do not show the cars exceeding the speed limits. Unless it is the IOM.

I watched last weeks episode last night and was slightly disappointed. It is starting to look like the format is struggling as there are few crazy/stupid things left for them to do.

Big fan all the same.

Honda badge was very clear on the outboard. Do you want me to tell you who paid for that?

Kind of like those "races" which are composed of numerous high speed flybys and tracking shots. You think they say "Right, stop the race, we need a few more shots, then we can restart it"
Good telly, just very well planned and executed good telly.
astraboy.
I'm of the understanding they do the races twice.

One is the actual race, the other is to get the shots they want for the television. I'm sure i read or heard it from Clarkson.

You want expensive? Try period costume drama. Something like Pride & Prejudice or Brideshead Revisited would cost significantly more per hour, I'm talking hundreds of thousands of pounds if not into the millions. Top Gear is good value in comparison, I'm sure they rented that big outboard instead of buying it and you could have picked all three cars up for pennies probably.

Licence fee is about 90 quid a year, quite happy if they turf out the odd gem like last nights TG, if that had been on a 18 quid Clarkson Christmas DVD you wouldnt have felt short changed like when you actually buy and watch an 18 quid Clarkson DVD !

The retards, women and gay men have big brother and all the other ****, is one hour of decetn blokey entertainment too much to expect, hell spend more money on it and take a few quid off Attenborough and Oddie, I mean there aint many new animals coming out but theres stuff like the new M Coupe due !

I don't believe for a moment that JC is driving those cars when he is telling us about how it is so much fun leaving blue smoke everywhere. I enjoy the show but he is a bit of a "tabloid" presenter.

It is not the publics money it is the BBCs money! who are free to do with it as they please.

You pay your TV Licence to get the service the BBC offer, if you don't like it then get rid of your TV.

The BBC is a business like any other and you are just paying for a service, if you do not want the service then don't use it.

If they put a top gear on every Sunday, all year, then as far as I'm concerned that's worth the licence alone.
