That'll be a good set-up fella.......

What car is it going on again?

Looks like you'll be pushing the 350 mark without wanting to jinx it.......

So it's light too.....impressive.....

Don't worry about teh gearbox too much but keep it in mind.......

I don't think my anti lag/launch control helped mine either.......

I like to proceed on the worst case scenario, so my advice would be to phone someone like David from APi up and ask him for some quotes on repair/replacement options should your gearbox give up the ghost. If you can afford the quotes then go for it, if not, I'd hold back with the turbo upgrade till you can. A std clutch would almost certainly start to slip before long -if not immediately- with the power output that set up would be capable of.

TD05s do have a bit of a reputation for eating std gearboxes. You have to remember that yours in 10 years old already. As Tripple OG says, you might get away with it, but I'm guessing you also don't want the car off the road while you have to save up for a gearbox rebuild.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings! Like I said, give an expert a ring and get the facts straight first.

So what torque would you suggest i go up to....without it likely to munch the gearbox?

I would suggest you talk to an expert mate! I don't think there is a definitive answer though!

I'm just saying that it would seem to be the common concensus on SN that if you go much above 300 ft lbs torque on a non-sti Uk gearbox, you shouldn't be surprised if it gives up. Depending on a number of factors, you may get away with it, you may not.

The real question is can you afford to take the gamble?

if you drive the car hard expect it to break the gear box is one of many things that will cost you if you do (tyres, petrol, oil changes , booster??, plugs, pads, disks etc etc etc)

i ve been running 320ft lbs for 18 months with no problem but when \ if it breaks I will be saying how good it was to last not how crap subarus are

unlike most I won't take mine on the 1/4 mile as I fear I would be asking for problems

pistons are worrying me more than gearboxs at the moment but 386bhp was just greedy

386bhp is almost spot on the level of a certain UK300 from a fairly regular member on here who I used to live a few doors down from - at that stage IIRC it had spat out a clutch, 3rd gear and a rear diff. It then went to have a couple of mods to try and break the magic 400bhp barrier; might have made it too, but holed a piston on the way to the rollers . . .

In answer to the original question, yes you'd notice a quite significant difference. You'll often notice the difference from some really quite small mods, although whether they're worth the money is possibly a different question!

As you probably gathered, there are levels of performance vs reliability. There are very few if any cases of people smashing standard gearboxes/clutches with the standard TD04 turbo on a WRX, so 280 odd bhp (perhaps more depending on which rollers you use) is no problem. Bigger turbos = more shove = more chance of breaking gearboxes. Driving style and luck do seem to also have a big influence on whether you'll break it at 310lbft or survive at 350lbft

Personally, not quite sure why you're looking soley at the VF34. If I ever kill my TD04, I'll be visiting Andy F for a hybrid TD04 which gives better spool up, still (a little) over 300/300 and doesn't seem to have a record for breaking the gearbox/clutch . . .

My 2002 WRX Bugeye ate the gearbox with only a 2.5" full decat and EcuTek remap!! Approx 270bhp / 270 lb ft???? Never been on the rollers and only done the 1/4 mile twice, once before the remap and once after.

..........plus I drive it like a fairy

I went from standard WRX 03 PPP to 309bhp/311ftlb with similar mods to yours and it is still going just fine nine months later on the original clutch, gearbox, diffs etc etc. Avoid launches from stand-still and you should be fine.
