I dont understand why its only the P1 that gets a bad rep for blowing up when it runs the same lump but more precations as an sti 5 and the answer when someone asks about buying one always seems to be '' buy a type r instead ''

Either that or search for posts on here by Mike Wood of Prodrive.
P1's are no more or less unreliable than any other UK supplied Impreza if they're treated the way they are supposed to be treated. You always hear about the cars that go bang, but don't forget there are many many more out there going strong.

The problem was not with the car, moreso with Prodrive and International Motors not doing enough homework (or did they?...out of warrantee now ). Shame really.
One thing nobody can deny is they are prone to problems. P1woc will confirm this so it's hardly P1 bashing, thankfully owner's pride has not gone to their head about defending the marque. Although I bet some avid fans will completely deny there is anything wrong at all.
I tried telling somebody the other day there is technically nothing wrong with the Triumph stag engine....but they weren't having it. (actually, being honest - in this modern age of coolant and antifreeze, electronic ignition, fuel and modern engine tuning tools, it can be perfectly ok as long as no cooling system corrosion exists ).

Most of the stuff that gets posted on there slatting the P1 is posted by people that have heard idle tittle tattle somewhere and are not shouting off about it, they have never owned one.......... at the end of the Day the P1 is no worse than an Import STI V or VI for mapping infact it's a little safer, but the P1 has better handling, it's unique style which just makes her so much better than the others and to top it off they are ltd!
All P1's should be mapped properly because, yes, prodrive were very lazy with this aspect of the car but they can be forgiven, they did everything else right
All scoobs have the same design floor..... (poo poo) intercoolers/bonnet design thus meaning high end speeds cause high charge temps as the air gets flung over the intercooler scoop, I mean who puts an intercooler on top of a hot engine and red hot turbo anyway !
This is the best Impreza that was ever released for purchase, don't miss out on a chance to own one !

Have to say guys, I have had my P1 for nearly two years now, just coming up to 53k. And I have never had any probs what so ever.
I have it serviced every six months, use it everyday and it is totally standard, apart from a set of Defi's and a straight through centre section with a back box.
I think it is all down to how they are treated and driven, mostly I molly coddle mine, but push it from time to time, but know where near it's capability.
One thing's for sure, where ever I am, be it displaying her at a show with LADS, or driving down the street, there is no other car that gets as much attention !!
So go and buy one, but look at a few like I did and check them out !!

I think he means the total cost of buying a Type R and having the engine rebuilt is less than just buying a P1 outright, due to higher P1 residuals. Depends what you want really, for 90% of real world driving the P1 is better and nicer to drive than an STI5 Type R, the STI5 Type R is better on those rare occasions you can really let rip on the road or preferably on the track.
If I was doing mostly road driving I'd choose the P1, the suspension and diff setup are a lot nicer to live with day to day. In an ideal world I'd have a P1 for the road and an STI5 Type R for trackdays.

had people jumping into the road to take pictures, constant swarms of lads in fwd hatches giving thumbs up. Stand out a lot more than a P1.
though that was when all EVO's were a lot rarer sight.

So far the info has been typically interesting & informative , cheers all.
I've had a P1 for over 3 years and it's not missed a beat, touch wood
I always ran it on Optimax, and NF up until I got a remap. I still use NF sometimes if going for a spirited drive, which is very rare btw.

I had mine rolling road tested on 100octane and was running 330bhp standard.

I totally understand people buying a type R over a P1 because its cheaper/it has more toys/its more hardcore etc.
Conversely buying a P1 cos its a UK car/it looks better/its a better day to day driver over a type R are all valid reasons.
If you buy a type R over a P1 because it has more power or its more reliable then you are away with the fairies
Its the same engine, ECU etc as confirmed by numerous mappers and Mike Wood on here recently.

The both look virtually the same anyway. I love the P1, but bought a Type-R cause it had more toys on it. Its just that little bit rarer. Mind you every normal person thinks its a P1 cause its a 2 door.

Sorry cyprus but there is no way on gods earth that a std STI V made 330bhp std, not a hope in hell!
PMSL @ Gary C........ Mate the Evo's look dated and square and they are god awful to drive!
All in all the P1 is the best EVER scoob, it has Everything that you would need and handles everything you put it through, you get the better car and it's worth the etc ££ over the type-R and a rebuild costs the same so there is no contest
All of these cars are going to fail sooner or later, tis the nature of the beast and the way they make people drive them, the only ways to prolong the life of any of these cars is :
Regular servicing
Proper warm up and cool down
No terminal velocity run..... keep her under 100mph and you are laughing or add a front mount !

Sorry my mistake. My mates just reminded me that mine had a Cusco straight through exhaust when it was rolling road tested. Mind you Top Gear tested one way back on UK fuel that produced 318bhp STANDARD!
