I had splits on 2 sets of these. Mine were 215/40/17 with 83y load rating.
I think its 87y that is recommended for the car (classic)- its listed next to the recommended pressures.
Only tyres in this size have the 83y rating. All the other sizes have higher ratings if you look on Goodyear's website. Therefore the splitting only really occurs on this size.
It has nothing to do with storage or bad batches- they are the wrong tyre for the car.
load rating is for Xkg at Yspeed for a period of time. Therefore if Y tends to be higher than normal depending what you drive like then the Xkg rating will be less and the tyres are more likely to split.
I insisted that all my split ones were returned to Goodyear and was refunded. Micheldever tried to fob me off with the pothole excuse but thats rubbish.
Hope that helps. Its a shame because I really liked them but am not willing to risk a blow out for them![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
I now use Yokohamas

Std 205/50/16s on my Classic with an 87y load rating. No problems at all. Very good tyre IMHO. Based on the experiences of those who've experienced splits, I'd just avoid using the 83y load rating, if that means going to a different brand, so be it.

Do not buy the GSD3's F1, seriously I have had 2 sets and both have had serious problems with inner tyre wall degradation, splitting and heavy scoring basically falling appart, on the front tyres.
I had a blow out on the first set, and thought like some other people that it may have been a bad batch, so bought the same ones again, same thing is going to happen this time, had the wheels off a few weeks ago and just thought a would have a look, and the same thing is happening again.
So, I spoke to someone that works and deals with tyres for a living, and as soon as I mentioned what the problem was he already knew about it, and told me for the type of car that I have 300+ STI Type R, (fair enough I do drive it pretty hard, but very well maintained
) I should be looking at Bridgestone's or possibly Toyo proxies, I mentioned about Pirelli but he said that they were not really up to much.
Basically if you drive your Impreza hard and it's kicking out 300+ bhp look for something other than GSD3's, it does take some time but they will start degrading on the inner tyre wall (front tyres only) rears seem to be ok.
If you drive your car normally the above need not apply

Interesting thread - didn't know about the splitting problem!
I don't have 300 bhp or 17"s (yet
) So I should be OK right?
I have run F1s - but not got anywhere near 30k out of them - only ~ 15/16k last set - might be lasting longer now that the missus is driving it to work instead of me doing country lanes
Cheers
Mick

I've got F1s on my car & they're ok. Not long replaced the old 87Y rated tyres with the newer design 93Y rated.
Haveing been a fan of Toyos before, I must say I'm impressed with the Goodyears. Very good grip, quietish & seem to wear well. The sidewall splitting problem is also not a factor with the hight rated tyres. All in all, I'm happy...
