Only the very early cars had a closed-deck block; but that doesnt make the slightest bit of difference to most people (in fact; most people dont even know what it means or what practical difference it makes).

just to confirm...that's the power for wrx ra's, and am I right in saying the first wrx sti ra was 275bhp? , same as a (quoted from website) 1995.08 : Impreza WRX STi 2
would these run comfortably on optimax/sul etc, or do they need ocrane booster too ?

Try Gary Moulson at Keith Michaels for a quote; Type-RAs have the same output as the contemporary WRX; they made 275PS yes (an STI Type-RA is VERY different from a Type-RA) and finally: A 1995 260PS car will probably run very well on Optimax, seeing as it has exactly the same ECU (Z4) as the 1995 Prodrive PPP; but I wouldnt the 275PS cars on straight pump fuel.

so if I want an STi RA, to have the DCCD etc then I'll have to use octane booster
have read it costs a fortune to get it mapped (although that might be for tuning, not just for running on diff fuel), suppose it'll lose some power too
phoned keith michaels, couldn't get a quote because they need 1 years experience in performance cars, but got some good advice, insurance isn't so much of a problem now

In my opinion, the ultimate early Impreza is the 1995 STI Type-RA, so I wouldnt let fuel octane problems disuade me..... You cant actually re-map a Z4 ECU, although you can fit a second IC socket and fit a replacement chip in it (ScoobyECU & similar). Id budget for an APEXi PowerFC fitted and mapped by Andy Forrest for £750, after Id altered anything else that I intended to do. Until then drive very carefully and use NF (or maybe Millers) octane booster.

I,d go for a version 4 v-limited,or for a few more bucks a version 5/6 limited edition sti type ra..
These are the only classic models that came with a helical front diff, not even on the 22b or the type r which had the normal open type front diff.
Makes a massive difference on inital turn in,and getting on the gas on exit.
