You will need GPS device (typically bluetooth) and PDA, plus Tomtom (for windows mobile or palm)
I already have an 02 XDA, so could have used above setup, but wanted a one box solution.
Its a pain in the *rse when the pda loses the bt GPS device, you have to carry two chargers/cig adapters; need to mount the pda and bt gps device etc etc
Functionally TT700 and pda/bt gps/tomtom software is (almost?) identical, but you are correct in that you could use the pda for other things (OBDII for starters!)
The price is probably similar, if not cheaper, with the PDA solution and you get a multi-function device to boot.
I just preferred the single unit/mounting/power solution.
www.pdamods.co.uk and www.expansys.co.uk are both good sources for all things sat nav and pda related.
