I found a pressure drop in the inlet tract with the stock airbox, so I'm trying APS cold air kit, which might be quieter, we'll see. The 3" exhaust is Mongoose, quieter than Magnex, but still too loud, I'm waiting for RC Devs to get a resonator - already have one in the centre, a second one will help a bit more I think.

Regarding the handling, on the smooth stuff it is ace, and I appreciate the body control and steering precision over the new STIs. However, the back end does skip over drain covers a bit more than a Scooby (but less than the non-Bilstein Evos), but it isn't anything like the M3 and the roads I hated this on I love the Evo on. At last it is me slowing things down rather than the ability of the car. Vertical body control is spot on though, and I like the S-AYC. Gaining confidence in the wet despite the Yokos if I change the centre diff to Gravel.

Nice EVO for sale HERE bit more than you origionally wanted to pay, but well worth it if you can stretch to the price. Why buy a V, when the car has EVOlved since then

cheers

i must recommend a full geometry set up from mitsubishi john.it will cost around £60 + the dreaded .i noticed the difference in handling. well worth it.
your car is a lot newer than mine was so it maybe to soon. but if you have took your yokos off i would do it.

My yellow evo 8 fq330 looked the part, but it never had the rawness or character of the type r - and I am looking at a £4k bill for a new gearbox!!
Its interesting what you wrote mate. I considered buying an EVO 9 FQ 340, JDM STi 8 Spec C RA, & STI Type-R V5. After much comparrison and 'extensive' testing, I settled on the Type-R for the same reasons as you. It was by far faster, better handling, better looking, better sounding, and more of a drivers machine than the other two.
The only downside is the interior, which is alot more modern in the other two, but not that bad in the Type-R.
I haven't regretted it!

I had a Silver WRX an Evo 7 and now have a P1

The Evo on lasted 3 months, they are soooo boring to drive, the car does alot of work for you and they really aren't as harsh as the scoob, the interior of the later Evos (7 +) is nice than that of a classic scoob but that's all it has going for it!

My P1 is certainly quicker than my E7 ever was and that was running 1.4bar with 3"straight through system and induction, walbro etc etc!!

If you want to sort the handling on the scoob go for whiteline kit, easy fix !

the scoob sounds alot nicer, the tappy hair drier sound of the evo is crap

All being said you get more power to the ££ with the Evo so the choice is yours... go for the drivers car and get the scoob or go for ££ to performance value and get the Evo

Here are two of mine, scoob is better IMHO

Its great to hear all your opinions lads, keep em up.

I'm lookin at Evo V and VI's as I prefer that look and with my budget I dont want to get a poor VII rather have a decent V or VI.

Whats the best classic to get with that money ??

Thanks White-un

The other half bought me a track day as a birthday present last year. I took out two cars of which both were Group N rally prepared, one being a classic scooby and the other a Evo 5. I know they were slightly modded , but after my alloted laps the Scooby felt like it wanted to put its feet up and have a nice cuppa, whereas the Evo was gagging for more. Both have pros and cons, just take them out on a very good test drive then make your mind up.
If I had the choice i'd sell my first born for £5,000 and get a mint Evo 6 Tommie Mak Edition for 15k .

I'm sure you will enjoy whichever you choose. Happy hunting, Wolfie.

P.S. I own a Scooby.

In the red corner EVO V or VI
and in the blue corner Classic STI ????
In answer to the original question..

Evo 6

Get the newest incarnation of evo you can as (as their name suggests) they get better the newer they get.

A classic sti is a great car, but the Evo has a much stronger engine and the 6 can be taken to 350/360bhp quite easily (fuel pump, remap, exhaust, GM 3 port solenoid, filter) and will be very reliable.

std vs std the classic sti will feel quicker than the evo IMO, but get the easy mods on and it'll walk the sti with same money thrown at both.

One thing I like about the evo is they get better the longer you own them. Yes both are quick but the impreza seems to feel slow after you've got over the novelty shove and the evo just amazes as it always seems FAST. The evo goes just as well in 3rd, 4th and 5th, noticeably faster than the sti over 80mph.

Only things I dislike about the evo are the off boost exhaust noise (on boost they sound good) and the styling sometimes becomes a bit of an embarrassment (must be getting old)

Intresting post there mate. but from what Ive been told by every performance garage I've ever dealt with (many rally speacialists included) and from my mates that own Evo's, they all say that the Scoob has the stronger engine!!! Mind you, you wouldn't think it with all the horror posts you hear on here about P1 engines going bang etc.

Having driven many different models of Evos and Scoobies, my money would be on an Type-R STi Version 5 or 6 every time!

On failing that, a V5 or 6 Type-RA or P1.

I've seen the stories about the P1 going bang and a lot of people say that the Type-R's can be a time bomb with mods. Is this true ?

I bought my first Scoob over an Evo due to the fact they were meant to be more reliable. Now Im hooked on Scoobs.
