Default Speed Cams

Trouble is, police cars and officers cost money and new labia is all about justifying your existence as a public servant - a gatso wins hands-down.[/QUOTE]

You got it in a nutshell... "justifying own existance". The people in power are more interested in the balance sheets than actually reducing crime. It's far easier to proscecute the motorist by camera under the pretence that its cutting crime and increasing safety. Any above average intelligence person will know that this is another form of taxation designed to rip us off.

It's not speed that causes accidents, it's the rate of decelleration that matters. i.e. 140mph on an autobahn is perfectly safe in good weather/visibility on a straight stretch and reducing to 100mph over the course of a mile is perfectly safe and achievable. Whereas trying to reduce your speed from 30mph to standstill in an urban environment, in an emergency scenario, with hazards such as pedestrians walking out into the road from the middle of 2 parked cars is going to be more difficult.

My point is that the first scenario is illegal in the UK where as the second is not, but the second scenario is more likely to result in an accident, not the high speed scenario.

Cameras do not consider any other factors other than the speed of the car and this is why a human element of reason SHOULD be involved in the process if we claim to live in a democratic and civillised society.

We have no Camera's in County Durham ........ For now.
Here is 2 reasons why this will soon change

1) The Ch Constable has/been forced to take early retirement (This January) and his successor is behind speed camera's
2) Durham Police will soon be amalgamated with Northumbrian Police, who love there speed camera's.

Both these reasons, and government pressure on the new ch Constable of Durham will soon mean they'll be popping up faster than daisies.
