p1mark: What you described I experienced in the Red Sea twice.
It's a dreadful feeling and I too thought I was going to black out.
I found out the cause from a very experienced fellow diver.
Basically I was suffering from a reverse block.
It was caused by having the air-con on too high in the room at night and it dries out your sinouses (spelling?).
It's highly unpleasant and I thought I was a gonner for sure.
Next night I turned off the air-con and didn't have the same problem.
When my g/f came out 4 days later she wacked the air-con up before we it the sack, and sure enough the next day it happened again.
Not conclusive evidence perhaps, but enough to convince me it was the cause.

I did it
Open Water Diver and booked to do Advanced in October (with a little fun diving booked for July)
Not bad for a girl who hates water, enclosed spaces and open spaces
God help the rest of the diving community

Congratulations.
Welcome to a whole new world of fun.
Make sure you contiunue to dive regularly and review your skills after each dive gap.
Get yourself over to the Red Sea at some point and see some real sea life :-)

If reefs are going to be your thing I think the mecca for that is got to be the Great Barrier Reef.
Most reefs around the world have very colourful fish but seem to have a set variety, the GBR has them ALL.
For me I think Nirvana will be Bikini Atoll if I ever get there.

GBR is truly amazing, but then I've never been to Bikini/Truk yet. My old boss went to Truk and said it was in a league above the GBR. Apparently loads of japanese ships/planes in a lagoon thats got more life than the GBR.

Congratulations..............
Get some dives in, and when you have some more experience, consider doing the "Rescue Diver" course.
IMHO, it's by far the most worth while course to do, and will give you BAGS of confidence.
Mark.

Years ago I leant to scuba and read the dive mags and marveled at the depths the heros did.
Over the years my diving has progressed and last October I found myself with my YBOD on a deep week in Sardinia with some of the current heros.
To my surprise they admire us UK divers due to sea conditions we dive in. The best bit was on the last dive, the handshakes on the first deco stop from my friends welcoming me to the 100m club.
Take your time and enjoy your diving - have fun - avoid the macho crap out there.

Ok a bit boastful (beer tastic)
My point still stands, anyone can do anything - me I'm nothing special.
Been there done that and the best dives to see colourful life are the shallow ones.
Always dive with a good bunch of people and have a laugh.
Brumdaisy - I've done the Red Sea in January and it is cooler which can be a bonus. If you are unlucky the wind will get up.
Don't be afraid to take seasickness pills if you think you may suffer. Take some advice on them though as some really knock you out.
