The only reason that post pissed me off was that it stated people that don't race must be in some way abnormal...surely that can't be right

PS I'm not a moral high horse, as I've stated lots of times I like to drive fast, I just don't race.

So being effectively told I don't belong on here, is somewhat annoying.

So am I wrong?
Please highlight specifically where I said I condone racing. Thank you, James.

I'm not drunk, which kinda of makes me look an even bigger ****.

I read your post all wrong, I assumed you were saying that if you disagreed with racing you should get a PRIUS

If you could see my face you'd see it was a lovely shade of red

Apologies, I'm going for I lie down

In my defence, reading through this thread there are a number of people suggesting that if you don't race you should get a different car.

No worries Martin, it's big of you to apologise.

Yes you are wrong in the sense that the thread starter just wanted a reponse to what you do when another drivers baits you, not a 3rd degree about being stupid, **** or whatever other term you care to use for someone who takes the bait and has a little play.
I am not one to go racing all an sundry but it does rub me up the wrong when someone drives an inch off my bumper, so do open the taps a little to build some distance.

I bite when it's safe to do so... and I sometimes bait others. I do enjoy a blast off a round about or fast drive down some B roads. As long as your keeping well within the car's and your own capabilites and the other person is doing the same respectively, then you shouldn't be a hazard. I definately agree that you have to expect the unexpected. Driving like you have a death wish, pushing the car and yourself to the limit on public roads is like playing russian roulet and sooner or later the worst is going to happen.

yes lowly, I too have owned both, there isn't much in it, but the WRX (blob) will pip a 330 to the post, the 330 is a gorgeous car and far superior to a scoob in many respects it's a shame that most owners think they are superior in every respect.

With respect to insurance premiums, I have had one accident in 14 years and used to average about 50k per year, so yes I am clearly pushing your policy up and for that I apologise,

Glad to see I'm not the only t**t on here

Two examples:

1. The other day a Vauxhall Vectra (2.0 Turbo ) pulled up alongside me at the lights, revving his engine, etc. Conditions were fine but the road was a dual carriageway with a 40mph limit and houses on both sides.

Result = he screeched away from the light like a scalded cat and I poodled on up the road.

2. Two days ago a Mitsubishi EVO 3 pulled alongside me at some traffic lights, similar revving antics. Conditions were again fine but the road ahead was a the slip road onto a motorway. Very early in the morning and light traffic.

Result = Evo 1 - Scoob 0.

A little common sense goes a long way. Just need a de-cat downpipe and TEK3 re-map now!!

There's a guy who came to us just once or twice to get bits for his P1, that is in Jail now for 5 years, if I remember, maybe even longer. He is the usual Subaru owner, late 30's I reckon, father of a lovely lad, and will rise to a challenge providing it doesn't get too far out of hand.

In his case, l am told, he got wound up by a guy in a MG ZR, whatever that is. Off they went passing traffic and so on, until Mike the P1 guy decided it was all a bit too risky and dropped off the pace. Slowed right down and I believe had even stopped.

The ZR freak carried on at full speed - lost it soon after, went off the road, hit something immovable and killed himself, all on his own.

Joe public arrived at the scene and recognising the ZR waited for El Fuzz to appear. They reported that the ZR had been ' racing ' a Subaru and by the way here's the number for it.

Nick, Nick, Mike got done for racing on the highway and because the other guy killed himself they threw a whole pile of books at him.

Now his life is in ruins and he's lost his job, probably his marriage and is residing in Winchester Jail as we speak.

True story !! - shocked me when his mate told me. Doesn't stop me having fun but sometimes you can just be in the wrong place. Remember, you have no idea whether the other guy can drive properly.

certainly makes you think, there's nothing wrong with driving quickly but stupidly is another matter.

by my initial post I wasn't condoning the behaviour, I would rather not get so easily wound up, I just don't like bad manners and to me, people deliberately baulking your progress constitues bad manners.

What David's post demonstrates though is you have to know where to draw the line when you react

Thats one of the real problems with racing people... just because you think that you are in your comfort zone doesnt mean the other person is...... and owning a scooby doesnt mean that you suddenly become a great driver who is comfortable at any speeds....

You know the story, you're minding your own business, going at your speed, no slower, no faster. You catch up to someone one who doesn't want to be overtaken, most of the time it's some lowly BMW 330 or something that the owner thinks is faster than it is, sometimes it's something a bit more juicy like the RX7 I came up behind the other day.

Now before I go on, I just want to say, that I do not go out in the morning with the intention to race everything on 4 wheels...

but sometimes, as the story goes, you get the smell of unleaded as they drop down a couple of cogs and you know that they intend to teach you a lesson, so why not you think, lets see how good they are....

so soon as the road opens up, you drag it up to whatever before someone relents, jop done another point proved.

I know this is infantile but I'm sure most have you done the same..

or am I the only t**t on here that takes the bait????
A lowly BMW 330 will do you on top end you immature ******.

was behind a lambo countach on the A1 this afternoon.couldn't resist trying my luck but was in a bit of traffic.when it cleared made sure i was in a low gear for when he booted it which he duly did.only really did it to hear the bugger howl but was surprised when it did'nt really gain that much on me.but alas soon hit some more traffic then he pulled into a petrol station.me and the wife did laugh when it spat out foot long flames on the over-run tho.sounded awsome to.would have been interesting to try to out drag it out of a roundabout

TYPICAL! I'm out with an Institute of Advanced Motoring Instructor, one of the best and most experienced Stockport has to offer. I pull up to the roundabout, positioned to take the 2nd exit in the middle lane, handbrake on, car in neutral, both hands on the wheel. Luckily for me, it's a warm evening, the windows are up and the air-con is on
Next thing, the wait for the lights on the roundabout is interupted by the shout of "what'll she do mister?" Turning to my right, NOVABOY, is in the right hand lane, revving the bollocks off his poor car.
"Come on then, lets race!" He shouts at me
I turn to my instructor, and can honestly say he is sniggering, don't think he's had this before, and amazingly, neither have I!
I mouth out of the closed window, "Can't mate, sorry" but that is lost on NOVABOY as the lights turn to green and he screams off over the roundabout. Bless him
Not worth wasting the fuel on most of the time, but cheeky drivers who think they own the road get a surprise at the lights every now and then.

Yep, that's exactly the problem David!

I'm afriad to say that many of the people who simply MUST rise to any challenge (I'm not having a go at anyone on this thread) should not have a performance car....or any car for that matter. I hate to sterotype, but it's more the "Nova/Corsa boi" variety that attract my displeasure.

The other day I was visting the GF and doing a steady 30mph along heavily residential streets with traffic islands lining the middle of the road. Suddenly Corsa boi decides it's completely inappropriate to do 30mph and decides to overtake. I can see what's going to happen, so I brake gently and give him as much room as possible to tuck in front before he hits a traffic island or me. Regrettably Corsa boi has completely over-estimated the overtaking ability of his 1.2 (as it turned out) car and won't make it to my side of the road before the Island (presumably he either didn't see it, due to poor road positioning or just didn't look), I slow down even more, but he's to busy with his completely inappropriate overtaking to notice, so goes the wrong side of the island. It was just blind luck that no one was coming the other way.

Now, exactly what had Corsa boi proved. That he was faster than a Scooby doing 30mph in 4th with the driver simply covering the accelerator at the time??? Well done that man!! What it actually proves is that he was a prize w**ker with no roadcraft and no regard for anyone else's safety.

BTW The next car to come down the opposite side of that road was -I kid you not- A Galaxy with a young family in it! 15 secs later and that could have been a very different story!!

i can see your point mate. if he had crashed his car and just done himself damage and the road let the little c**t get on with it, but to put your life and a whole familys life in danger that 15 secs later, what is he trying to prove?

he obviously knows a standard 1.2 corsa wont beat many things never mind a rally car... so how would you understand his motives lol.

something similar happened to me round midnight today...

i was coming down ashby high street in scunny (built up residential area with traffic lights, mini roundabouts centre islands etc) doing 30mph in 4th as the law says. even at night i wont cane it down this road as there is just too many blindspots for disaster to strike.
anywho a beemer comes up behind me nearish the bottom stretch of this road, full beams revving like mad. doesnt take a rocket scientist to know its probably beein nicked and driven by twocers. so i keep my speed at 30 and he/they pull along aside of me (still remembering theres traffic islands in the middle of the road) in the oncoming traffic.

i would be pathetic to take this as bait as they were maybe seeing where i was going as a possible target. so i put my windows up, locked my doors and kept calm. the beemer then blasted past me doing round 70mph and screeched round the next right bend just missing a couple of wheely bins and a house for that matter - car was on 2 wheels going round the corner.

i kept my speed still even though i was ****ting myself, and got to the bottom where i make a left turn to my road. i did however turn my lights off as i was driving down my road so not to give the twocers a good sight of where i was parking up as they were now burning around at ridiculous speeds and you could here it from considerable distance. parked up quietly and went inside. i was mysbe being silly and dangerous switching my lights off, but i didnt want to risk me or my girlfriends safety if they followed so took that chance.

moral of the story...

sometimes the bait may not be what it seems.

2 mates of mine have been given bait and had there cars nicked in the same night... coincedence or twocers trying to find new prey to steal...

my rant over lol

Its not just young boy racers,I posted a while ago on here about some middle age bint who was dawdling at about 60 until I went to overtake then she floors it in her focus, unfortunately after leaving her behind and settling at a decent speed, she decided catch up at about MPH and decides to flash me,and giving me the wnaker sign. Being about 1/Mile from the roundabout and this is the lane I need to be in I decide to stay in the lane.
After coming off the dual carriageway She then spends the next 2 miles sat feet from my bumper randomly flashing me ,and her husband pointing at his mobile phone making a point that he is filming my number plate. Finally having enough of this bull**** I point towards the lay by and indicate to go in At which point they sheepishly drive past not even daring to give us a glance

Bit of advice mate,

If you ever suspect you are being followed, keep your lights on, but DO NOT drive home. Just drive normally around the block (or find a big roundabout). If they follow you around in circles, chances are a) they are following you b) it's the fuzz c) Someone is completely lost and just wants to latch onto someone!!! Find somewhere public with CCTV, petrol stations are ideal, and pull over there. Most likely they'll drive straight on, if not, keep your doors and windows locked and position the car so you cannot be blocked in. The sensible thing to do for anyone lost would be to ask at the petrol station not you. If it's the police, ask to see their ID before getting out the car.

Only really ever been baited once. O3 STI felt that my doddery old classic needed a lesson teaching so he overtook me coming out of a village over double white lines. This annoyed me so we "Pressed on" for a short time.

Other than that I'm usually more concerned with losing so don't risk it in the first place. I'll always let the car go and then if I can be bothered follow behind - this gives a good indication of what the other person is like. If they do anything which I wouldn't do or I feel is too much of a chance then I'll back off immediately.

Not saying don't have a little play but don't risk everything just to make a point/show off.

I've never taken the bait since i bought my scooby.

I love driving it so much i want to keep my no claims \ 0 points so i can afford to run it in the future... so i minimise any risk by making sure I drive safely at least.

I'm 23 and used to drive a Saxo VTS in much the same way...

If that angers\offends\amuses anyone then email 'wecare@aol.com' and i'll wave as you 'overtake my slow ****' while i'm out enjoying a drive

IIRC the guy driving the Subaru was driving along at speeds up to 145mph with his kids in the car.

The police got the speed information from the tracker he had installed in his car.

If I recall correctly -and we're talking about the same case- then you're correct. I'm not defending that driver, he was being a prize prat to do those speeds, especially since he had his blooming kids in the car!!

However, the real lesson for us all to be taken from that accident is reflected in David's closing comments: you don't know what the other guy will do. However, if you are seen to be racing them at any point and they do kill themselves or someone else, you will have some of the responsibility for their actions placed on your shoulders and, consequently, may end up in jail even though you didn't directly cause any harm or damage.

Do you think he'd have got a custodial sentence if he'd just been done for speeding. My bet would have been a hefty fine and 1 year ban and retest etc...

We don't exactly drive discreet looking and sounding cars, and it doesn't take much imagination from the public to think that we might be racing even when, in point of fact, we may only in second gear at 25mph!

Yep. You get a performance car and it's time to grow up! To be fair I think a good proportion do.

I could stamp on the throttle in 2nd at 25mph in my 1.3 popular Escort and 3 seconds later, I'd be doing 27.5 mph Do that in my classic Scooby and it'd be bye, bye license!!

Agree entirely especially the last sentence!!

I drive a completely standard Turbo 2000 so reasonably quiet exhaust.

On my way home yesterday I went to turn into my road when a 3 year old ran out between two parked cars in front of me.

I was doing 5-10 mph tops and stopped easily - But becasue of the car his parents looked at me as if I was the devil - Even though they had let their child run off 20 yards in front of them on a busy road.
