My lady spent four years getting her 1st class Undergraduate honours in Scotland then a further 3 years on a PHd in England (Scientist) but is embarrased about calling herself Dr (which she is entitled to) as she feels it should be reserved for MD's (like Dougie Howser )
Personally, I think she should - she worked damn hard for it, like everyone else
Me, I screwed up my honours and just got an ordinary degree
Back on topic - she bought a brand new Toyota Prius...but then she is a senior scientist for the Environemnt Agency

Can you elaborate? I'm doing a doctorate at the moment (yes a real one ) which will obviously make me Dr Paul LOL... although I won't use it other than maybe trying for a free upgrade on flights . Never liked titles, don't even use Mr anywhere, I hate those websites that have title as a required field when filling in your details.
But anyway, back to the point, I thought the logical profession from doctor if you want to stay in academia is professor? Takes a while to get there mind, and not many do, but what are the other options except going into the workplace like most people do?

On flights they'll just call you to stick coathangers into chests and then try to sue you, so you can tell them you're a real doctor and don't do that sort of work
Very few do want to stay that are not proper doctors...
Onto the original subject though, a typical medical graduate is simply a bachelor of medicine and a bachelor of surgery, a doctorate is a higher degree like proper doctors do.
However, most PhD students I've known have been a bit eternal student, endlessly overdue dissertation types that seem to know everything about nothing. I'm sure that isn't you Paul

Anyone can book their local restuarant under "Dr",but remember dont start panicking when someone chokes on their chicken tikka and the staff come running to you for help.
Also think there is a time and a place to use your title as lets say your on holiday and someone finds out your a G.P ,how long do you think it takes for a steady stream of old dears wanting to quiz you on all the symptoms under the sun!!
Then lets say your plane crashes,in a Lost(tv show) type of way,the poor guy ,Jack who plays the Doc ,is rushed off his feet tending to every bugger! He doesn't get a minute to catch some rays
Oh and as for the car ,should be looking at something more upmarket!!
