I have a VRS for the missus and use it once or twice a week as its a Company car.
I love it its cheap quick and fun.
Its gonna get mapped soon so when I use it It will put an even bigger smile on my face and I love all the sooty smoke that folk behind will get thats all they`ll be seein!!
The only true downside so far is the 5hitty seat colour.
With the kids the seats already look shockin!!!
Might have some leather chucked in it sometime.
Residuals do seem good too but its a much cheaper motor for me so I`m well happy.

Normally, I'd say if you're going to be doing mega-miles or many long journeys, get a reasonably sized car so you can be comfortably seated and have a few toys to play with.
In this case, I don't know if that holds true. The Fabia is surprisingly big inside and it's easy to get and remain comfy.
Can you know that the drivetrain and toys in the Rover/MG will be reliable? What about the electrics? If you can find a good indy specialist near you, then that may sway your decision.
For the Fabia VRS, against it go road noise, most of the interior trimming/styling, lack of options, standard suspension setup (though I don't know the Rover's). It's a car built to a lower price point and it shows. Even if it's well screwed together.

No sweeping statments here, just honest opinion.
I've been reading this thread with interest since it started and have debated whether or not to post in case I get slated but here goes anyway!
I had 10k to spend over last few months on 2nd car. Had to be a bit sporty, but cheapish to run, nearly new and reliable.
After weeks of test driving and sums it came down to between a Fabia Vrs and a Fiesta Zetec S and I bought the Fiesta. In all honesty I traded an old Zetec S in (which I also had from new), because I simlpy could not fault it for an all rounder. The Fabia was good but less 'involving' behind the wheel.
The old Fiesta;
Great chuckability, fun and handled like a limpet.
Cheaper to insure and run than the 172 Clio/Civic Type R.
38-40 mpg (I have a lengthy commute).
Never let me down.
Again, this is my opinion. The new Fiesta Zetec S does all these but better. I loved the Fiesta ST and the Clio 172 but it came down to something less 'mad'.
I dare anyone to try one and not admit it makes you feel like a great driver (which I'm not).

My Dad (65) has just bought a new 1.6 Ghia with full leather. I think I could drive it round town and down B roads all day and not get bored, it's a smashing drive.
I don't think I could live with it for a motorway commute though as they are firm, a little too much wind and road noise at high speed and even 5th is quite low geared so a bit of engine noise as well. The vRS would perhaps be a better option for those who do long high speed journeys.

Hmm, might not need to bother with either, the mother in law is changing cars so there is a Golf TDi, possibly availalbe, trouble is its a 100 bhp and an auto, I have driven it and its quite nice, would probably suit my commute quite well. I have enquired about a remap and the auto box is not a problem, apparently 140/150 bhp is possible even from the PD100 engine so that would take it from slow to adequate, plus its only done 20k (maybe even less), will be fairly cheap and its got aircon.
So sensible taken care of for day to day, I can then concentrate on a project car.

As I've said many times before they are good little cars just not rocket ships. The golf in question wouldn't be a bad alternative at all if it saves significant cash that could be spent on something that's actually fun to drive.

If handling is the important factor, then the MG is the best bet. Though the Jabba ARB is supposed to transform the handling on the vRS - looking at getting that mod put on to mine.

I think I might just separate the whole performance/handling from all the other critieria (such as 60 mile a day commute) as no one car I can afford fits it, might go for this Golf and then get something else to have a bit of fun with. trouble is, even when being practical there are minimum criteria to be applied such as the 13.5 second 0-60 'sprint' as performed by a 100 bhp golf Diesel Auto, that 5.5 seconds longer than my current car so A remap would be a neccisity just to get it near 10 seconds. Plus according to Parkers it does 42 mpg compared to 52 for a manual !

6 months, I was thinking a week or two, sometimes boring is good though, I mean I wouldnt fancy a really highly strung hard riding manual car with a heavy clutch for sitting in traffic, that when a Diesel auto Golf is perfect, the rest of the time, anything would be better.
Quite fancy buying my old Mark 1 Golf back or even doing a track day Clio.

Like the Fabia it will have masses of mid range grunt and feel like a much larger engined car. Have no idea what an auto box will throw in the mix though.

Have driven it a few times and its better than I expected, very easy and relaxing to drive, does feel grunty enough when you arent thinking about it but when you actually decide to go faster you have basically had all it has to offer, much like most diesels and unlike small petrols that make you rev them for any meaningful progress.
Hence the remap/tuning box.

Though now I am 'excercising it' a bit on the nicer B roads, ( and in N.Wales there are plenty of them), I can forgive it anything!
I can really grab it by the scruff of the neck and explore it's limits without ever feeling that the car is beyond my capability, escpecially in the wet.
It's a hoot!
