it was pissing down earlier, so it was doing a grand job of filling my 12ft pool i bought at the weekend
going to go out in a moment and get the water butt out, get that filled, attach the hose pipe to it and then to my pressure washer and bobs your uncle, a way round the ban

any busybodies come round my gaff to have a go, are going to be sorely disappointed....

We live in the pissing wet North so have no ban in place, but lets assume I wanted to water our back garden and filled up 250 watering cans to do it over a long time period?

Wouldn't it be better to spend 10 mins with the hosepipe???

Fecking joke as per usual in the UK!!

Not that we have enough water pressure to use a hosepipe

As an aside, does this mean my water bill is going to be cheaper than usual?
As I understand, we pay for a service, part of that service (under normal conditions) is that I can use as much H20 as I want when I want, that service has now been limited.

Quite right we don't actually pay for the water but the service, compromise the service then the bills should come down.

If I and others can abide by the rules and try to help the situation by not using a hosepipe why can't you. It's not really necessary to use a hosepipe anyway - heard of a thing called a watering can

As for the unnecessary comment by Rabid (i can see where you get the username), with regards to minding your own business and ratting - for your information this is enforceable with a £1000 fine and there is a phone line to report persistent users

I know water companies are as much to blame for leaks losing thousands of litres but I am trying to help the situation by not being selfish

Nicely put

I have now plumbed my Karcher into our water butt so the car can be cleaned (legal to do so apparently)

We fill the kids paddling pool twice a week and when it's time for it to be emptied the kids get a watering can each

That goes back to my point though.

10 mins hosepipe, vs 4 hours watering can - you use the same amount of water but it takes longer so how is the siutation helped?

I'd quite happily save water if it didn't **** it down for 350 days a year meaning there shouldn't be a water shortage in the first place - funny how hot countries can manage, similar to how the UK collapses when we get a smattering of snow.

Any ideas?
Stand on the hose, thus cutting off the water supply. When he looks down the end of the nozzle (as he undoubtedly will) you can take your foot off the pipe with hilarious consequences.

It is 10 years since the last hosepipe ban in Yorkshire. To assist in enforcement they actually used a fecking helicopter to spy on you with most sorties been flown once the sun had just gone down!!

True for houses charged on rateable value.
If you are on a meter then its a consumption charge, not a service charge.

If charges are consumption lead through fitting meters then water use drops.
This is a major contribution to the problem in the SE.
Not only is there low rainfall but SE Water companies don't want to push metering as their income from householders will plummet if widespread metering is enforced.

As for a hose vs watering can - that's the whole point of a hosepipe ban . It stops people leaving hoses on in the garden and wasting water - rather obvious isn't it??

No its not obvious - takes me 10 mins to water the garden with a hose. Would take maybe 2 hours using the watering can - the consumption would be the same

Then you are a dedicated gardener who has the time to spend.

The hosepipe bans are to cut out lazy bugg3rs who come home from work in the evening and turn on the sprinkler for an hour or two in the vain hope that it is doing the grass any good.

Believe me, it is very obvious from flow meter info when this waste of water take space and how it gets cut out with a hosepipe ban.

Maybe I am mistaken but I was under the impression you cannot charge for water as it is a natural resource and thus you pay for the service, be it metered or non metered.
