well its when you hear the turbo spool up in the early stages it has a sort of crackling / spooling noise which then clears fine above 4000 rpm - took it to Subaru but they said it was fine and the guy couldnt hear anything!

I had the same sounding noise a few months ago and traced it to be the turbo heatshield. I removed it and now its gone. The noise was bugging me for 2 years.

is the turbo heatshield the small piece of metal on the top of the turbo with the "hand" sign on it?

Havent noticed it lately (or my ears have tuned it out)

I have a noise that I would describe as you have, and for the same scenario.

My car is a MY07 WRX that's done 800 miles.

The 1st 2 tanks of fuel where RON95, and since using RON97 I reckon the noise level is reduced but is unfortunately still present.

From checking a couple of 'noise' threads, it sounds safe enough to wait until the 1000mile thin for thick oil swap and mention it then.

Heatsink/solenoid/injector maybe?

pretty sure this ticking noise before spool up is the wastegate opening and shutting rapidly as boost pressure is built up. It opens but because the pressure isn't there to sustain it, it shuts again and then goes back and for until pressure is built to keep it open. I've had my dealer look at it but they agreed it was probably this but couldn't do anything more with it. After research on nasioc it seems they all do it to varying degrees dpends how much it annoys you. Adjusting the wastegate arm actuator can make it better but made no difference to mine other than being able to make it worse. Subaru technical are next to useless imho, as they even told the dealer there was no adjustment on the actuator arm (true for an sti but not wrx like mine). Heres a link for info.

At the imminent 1000 mile service I'll mention symtoms of wastegate flutter.
If at the end they say it's normal I'll be happy

I'll keep you posted.

Mentioned @ the service.
No noise heard by them.
To be fair, it had almost gone away by the time I'd got it there, so maybe it's now clearing up a bit when warm.
And judging by the time entered on the incoice the car wouldn't have cooled down much for the service.

It looks like they charged me for a litre of top up oil that I can't even find!?*

*- found back @ dealer
