I slept soundly too

What you still havent answered is wether Englishman is offensive or racist ?

I would like to know, perhaps you could find out and let us all know if we are still allowed to say Englishman, Irishman etc

I certainly dont know, like I didnt know about chinaman, a quick google shows it is terminology for some things (cricket I believe) also there are books called Chinaman etc etc etc

Yes they are not in the context I used it in

My last name rhymes with an offensive word (to some, mostly women) I get called it a lot, it doesnt bother me as it is all done in the context it is meant (very poor humour)

You have your opinions, and are entitled them, as am I, like you said, I did apolgise, as my uneducated naivety has shown that I was incorrect in the poor attempt at humour based on a person's nationality, and for that and any offence caused I apologise for

Like I have said in the PM, which you havent responded to, Im happy to give you my personal details so we can discuss this court appearance further

Steve
As has already been posted elsewhere and subsequently removed I did not offer to 'see' you in court.

My misunderstanding by posting on an old thread resulted in you saying you had no idea what I was talking about. My response was to invite you to 'join' me in court to see that racist language was all of the things I have described which can be seen in court as cases are prosecuted.

You should only ever apologise is you intended to cause offence. If sensitive souls get the wrong end of the stick it aint your fault .

Me - I aim to offend and only ever apologise if the "offended" person is really really upset

That wasnt how I read it last night, maybe I was too tired, maybe I was annoyed at your posts on something entirely different

I didnt see the thread this morning that has subsequently been removed, so if you had responded on it, I never saw it

Anyway im off to have some real life now, for the next few weeks

have a good day

Technically, if you're doing a comparison using the term Englishman, you ought to use Chineseman.

And I'm not offended by the Nottingham greeting, btw... more worried about the strange folk with white-wheeled cars, that live there

Wink

I am chinese and recently I mentioned that calling me a ***** wasn't a favourable word because the meaning of slit only referred to Chinese people because of their eyes.

I did it by PM the other user but I knew the person didn't mean it offensively. Basically they didn't know it as being offensive.

If someone was to call me it in a threatening manner then I wouldn't find it hard to tolerate.

I think the law behind it a little over the top for a forum but racial name calling or anything which offends someone should be stopped on respect to the other party if it bothers them so much.

By strict definition if you found someone (of another race) calling you an Englishman exclusive or offensive then by the definition of the law it could be tested for being offensive or racist.

The difference I would suggest is that the derogoratory nature of the use of 'chinaman' is well documented as it has a specific historical context. This dates back to the 19th century. This is reflected in most definitions as you will know if you have been searching on Google.

I am not sure that Englishman has a similar history and so the burden of proof would be greater.

Rannoch, what is your ethnic background?

I've been in England all my life and racism was a big thing over 15 years ago but nowadays, i never hear it or get any abuse. I think things have change alot.

I am very light my dear friend. Maybe you should lighten up.

Whether I find something personally offensive and whether something is racist is not mutually inclusive.

I do think it is racist, I am not personally sensitive to it.
