I understand that there is a gang that works out of the Sutton Coldfield area that connects to a similar gang in Leicester and another in Nottingham and they share spoils.

Not a bad idea to take your dog with you and leave it in the car, windows down a bit and water of course. That'd fix it. Not much else will I am afraid.
The problem we all face with alarms and trackers is that the guys that nick cars know where to look, so whilst one thief is driving, another is totally trashing the inside of the car to find the transponder for the tracker. if they haven't found it inside 6 minutes they abandon ship and ' There's your car, been found for you Sir '. But in the condition you find it, you won't want it back......

Your absolutely right unfortunately 6 minutes is for a blind one legged thief
The trouble is that most owners are tottally oblivious to the limitations of such alarms. They feel all is Ok and nearly invinceable and wonder why they cannot find the stolen car.
little knowing that for the price of 1 years subs someone can legally buy a unit to drown out it's signal from under 5mtrs away or locate the anttena and kill it fairly quickly.
I have to agree some of the more "Mechanical" methods such as a Rotwieller etc may not so easily overcome as the more shophisticated "electronic" alarms

With your vast experience of the Motortrade and Subarus a couple of Q's for you
1) are there any alarms out that would even stop you bypassing the install?
2) Would the tied in transponder to the ECU be the hardest to overcome (Select Monitor)?
3) is it a good hidden "install" more important than the acutual alarm fitted?
As said "Alarms and systems" are just a delaying tactic for Car thieves and the longer it takes them the more chance of getting cauught

Something I have been reading on the TT forum is the 'One click', a device that lets you flash your ecu with a new image, much like our mapping but with a more generic set up. Anyway....the beauty of this device is that you can plug it back in and flash back the OEM image when you go into the dealer etc....
Now....in the US they have gone a step further and their device has a multitude of default maps, one for valetting and security ones.
Imagine mapping your car with a security map to only do 1000 revs or something else daft like that before you left it for a day. Their not going to get that far? Even if they tow it away they still have to deal with the problem when they try and drive it?

Erm, leaving dogs in the car in this weather isn't a good idea obviously, infact even on an overcast day don't leave your dog in the car.

I cant believe that in this day and age it isn't possible to fit an alarm that can alert someone before the thieves have a chance to disable/rip it out unless they have the means to prevent all radio/gps or mobile phone signals being transmitted in which case maybe the answer is to remove a vital piece of the electronics somehow when leaving the car or a plug lead though this isn't ideal? what about a device that transmits pictures from inside the car?

as also said, Alarms have to be fitted
A) In a place difficult to get to
B) Close to all the Cat1 required dis-connection pionts
Which limits the number of places,
1)you or me and a screwdriver 2 hours
2)Alarm installer(without scratching parts) 30mins
3) Crim (with absolute no regard for damage) 30-120 secs

Yep nice idea but don't fancy lugging my steering wheel around when I leave the car. How about fitting big lockable spikes to seats ?

Where there's a will there's a way, no matter how you protect the car.

Lads a mate had his STI stolen recently,
got it back next day
Thieves couldn't go far as rev's set to 1000rpm
What do ye reckon. good idea or is it easy to get around.
Brings control unit in home at night.

God, i only just read this thread and i was there yesterday.
Thankfully the car was still there when i got back.
The security on the car park is very poor! Only an odd camera here and there, plus the easy access to the car park with surrounding main roads makes it a great location for an easy getaway
