I was thinking the same - if there was an upward force then fluids would be spraying all over the place!!!

No. Surface tension is insignificant, unless you are one of these.

If you had spent more time concentrating on Physics instead of looking up Melanie Braithwaite's skirt, you wouldn't be making such feejits of yourselves

I think you are mistaken, surface tension of a fluid affects far more than pondlife.

Okay.

Added, gel like substance which normally behaves like a liquid but when agitated takes on the properties of a solid. Thus can connect two moving parts ie engine and gearbox.

That's a non-newtonian fluid, and it's a question of viscosity behaviour, not surface tension, i'n't it?

The earth's mantle behaves in much the same way, over longer timescales. Seem to remember something about Young's strain modulus. :chinrub:

Yes correct, that was a general query on fluid dynamics and not surface tension related.

Oi Social Service Lane

Where in that little extract does it say anything about the liquid pushing upwards? The liquid just sits there and is displaced by something of lower relative density.

Anyway, speaking of non-Newtonian fluids, custard MMmmmmmm
