I played a round with Sam Little (european tour pro) a couple of weeks ago. He shot 66. 2 things stood out to me compared with playing with normal golfers.

1. Course Management
This guy is seriously good, yet he was taking a 3 wood off some tees when I just took my driver out because I thought it would be fine (i'm off 9). He went for certain parts of the green when I just went at the flag. Why do that when he could have gone more aggressive? because he calculates risk/reward perfectly.

2. Routine
EVERY SINGLE SHOT was prepared in the same manner, irrelevent of whether it was a wedge or a driver. He was chatty, then suddenly went into his pre shot routine. He didn't hit a ball unprepared, he didn't rush anything.

I've played with plenty of low handicappers, high handicappers, scratch golfers etc. And I can tell you that the difference between me and him in the above 2 points was a lot more than between me and a high handicapper and I thought I did 1 and 2 well.

just my tuppence worth of golf comment

I would advise you to take a 7iron and a pitching wedge to the driving range and hit *****. Dont stand there pounding ***** nonstop just say 30-50 ***** a visit is plenty, dont stay there all day hitting 1000 *****. your better off going 3 times a week to the range and hitting 35 ***** each time, then play 1 round of golf a week and keep your scorecards, you will then have something to beat each week and see how you are improving.

The aim is to get to the point that you strike the ball well 8/10 times, doesnt matter where it goes(at the range) just so you hit the ball pretty solid.

at this point you need to have a lesson or 2 with someone who knows what they are doing(a pro or v good player that you know) and they will then point you in the right direction of things to work on.

once you have done this say over the winter months you will then be ready early next year to decide how seriously you are taking it and what products you want to look at buying! This way you wont have wasted money on a begginners set and you could go out and buy a set of irons from a top brand company and get them custom fitted for your new swing!

as a begginner you wouldnt notice any difference at all from the clubs you have now to a new set of callaway X-18's!!

At the range just take your time, make sure you warm up before hand and stretch first, then just keep your eye on the back of the ball and swing at comfortable pace to get started!

Top advice

Wow, cheers everyone.

I thought I would be slated for putting up this thread. I'm so chuffed others like golf!

Thanks a lot for all the pointers, I'll bear it in mind.

My game is getting better all the time, played 9 hole Par 3 tonight with a mate and came home with a round of 41. Was dead chuffed my highest score to date!! Was just relaxed and didn't have people following, which tends to put me off sometimes.

Clubs I'm using at the moment are the blade ones, I do occasionally find myself slicing shots, but the majority of the time they are straight and true. They're just a little old and ideally I'd like some shiny ones that don't look like they are 1930's throw back. lol
I did go and buy a nice Slazenger XTC V-II, beautiful club to use nicely balanced and weighted. It's getting better every time I play.

I've kept all my score cards to date and have seen improvement on virtually every round. Just waiting 'til I think I'm good enough to play a full 18, don't want to look like a noob or a prat.

Anyone live near MK fancy a knock about some time?

Ted, Sam Little is a friend of a friend. Top lad and a good player I know many European Tour players and the difference between them and an amatuer playing at international level is immense, no comparison. I play on the PGA Europro tour and not wanting to sound big headed but the difference between me and a scratch golfer is big too. You just have to raise your game to compete and be really really consistent with a repeatable swing. Bloody tough

like i said before and something you noticed, Course management. It is massive, knowing when to attack a flag and when to play for the centre of the green.

For everyone reading this thread, next time you play just focus on hitting the fairway even if your playing 5 iron and aim for the centre of the green, dont even look at the flag. Take 2 putts and i garantee you will shave shots off your round!!!

Think an SN get together should be on the cards

Some interesting stuff on here.

Don't agree with the steel/graphite shafts in drivers statement though.

If you pick any brand of driver and compare steel against graphite, IMO they will be the same length.

The pro's prefering steel shafts, I agree that for their irons 99% use steel shafts, but in their drivers I think nearly every pro uses graphite. (I may be wrong and I will look tonight, but feel sure that they do)

Your right Scrappy, i know of only one pro who uses steel in his driver.

Think Sergio Garcia still uses steel in his driver though

Just my tuppence worth Definately listen to people who tell you to stay with cavity backs as a beginner/good intermediate, blades really do need to be hit perfectly on the sweet spot all the time or you do end up with slices, thins, shanks etc. I use mizuno T-zoid, they are probably the best of both worlds, not quite a blade but not a full blown deep cavity back but with a large sweet spot.

As most people have said already its a mind @#ck game, so having the best clubs you can buy doesnt mean you will play well, I know many guys who will spend a couple of hundred quid on a driver only to change it for a new one when they have a few bad shots with it, so it can be an expensive spiral to get into!

Shot choice is the big thing in golf, what you think you can do and what you actually can do tend to be miles apart! 9 times out of 10 you tend to go with the "I could do that" shot and end up in trouble. Practise your putting, if your two putting instead of three your saving 18 shots a round, and as someone said take a nice easy swing, dont try to knock the skin off the ball.

Most of all enjoy it, i tend to play better when im out with a good group of mates having some banter, stops me thinkin about the bad shots Ive played LOL

Really struggling with the driver at the moment - its work in progress

On the brighter side my short game has improved remarkably.

How about yourself mate?

Im off 8, should be lower really but dont play in enough singles comps at the club and to be honest i only play once a week so do have the occasional mare as i dont have the consistancy i need due to no practise

the big thing for me this season is i hit the ball a mile but have no consistancy with my driver at all! 3 woods fine and can hit that 280yds but i refuse to give up on a driver and just use the 3 wood as it would be accepting defeat !

i need to play a bit more really!

Bought my new clubs today, was on the spur of the moment. Walking through the centre and found full set, graphite shaft Dunlop 65i clubs reduced down to £73.

Had a try, different from my other steel shafts. Beautiful set though really happy with them. Should laast me a while!

I have really appreciated all of your comments.

This is quite feasibly the most uninteresting thread ever to appear on the internet. You golfists have got a lot to answer for, standing in the pub/office doing your imaginary tee-off swings and droning on about it. You should all be made illegal. Save this rubbish for your retirement years and do something creative for god's sake you tedious simpletons.

pop to your local golf club's pro shop... he might have a px set in the back, see if he'll throw a couple of free golf lessons in with the price too

i know the feeling... now off 16... was down to (12.5) 13 a few years ago... once a week/comp golf no good!!
i've had a Cobra rescue iron at xmas... small head about a 2 would. can hit it from anywhere!! goes miles!!! no no need for the 3/5 woods in my bag... a lot straighter off the tee too than my TaylorMade driver!!
get one!! its a shot saver!!
also a 'jigger' for round the green helps too... but don't tell everyone!

now read you have some golf clubs..

Got down to 4 when I was a student. 36 holes as day does wonders for your short game. Unfortunately real life kicks in.... you get a job, a woman, some kids, some debts and suddenly 36 holes a day is "unreasonable" ..... handicap creeps up to double figures and before you know it you need a shot a hole.....

The really sick thing is that I got offered sponsorship to go for a tour card when I was 16. I turned it down as I wanted to get an education first OH:

Need to get some practice in with the new graphite Dunlop 65i clubs. Didn't realise a new set of clubs would be so different. can see the benefit in distance though, miles further than my old steel shafted cacky pinseeker driver!! Is that down to the graphite shafts?

Really nice clubs though, anyone else used these?

They seem to be what the SPORTS WORLD shops sell now instead of Donnay stuff. I guess they bought the 65i brand, because in the US all the Dunlop stuff is "LoCo" and endorsed by John Daly.

I tried a Loco driver didn't find it to be a bad club, but the shaft was a really bright yellow and I wouldn't have been able to live with it.
But at least I would have been seen in the fog

Mine have nice black graphite shafts, amazing weight difference to my old steel shafted clubs!! The bag weighs half as much, relief for the shoulders!! and I don't have to keep laying the bag down cos it has the stands.

Yellow shaft clubs would match me car???!!!
