Where do you stand if a car you've sold breaks down after selling?

I emailed the guy after a day or two giving him some info I'd forgotten. he emailed back and said 'ta, ut you owe me 60 squid for new seats 'cos the ones in the car are broken ...'. Que???? Emailed him for details and left a message on his phone asking for details - in both places pointing out as well that they had been fine when I sold the car to him. He never got back to me at all - just left 'neutral' feedback on Ebay. Trying it on ....
... as tis bloke is so my advice as as above - get the rozzers involved - at least they seem interested. Oh, and have you got friendly neighbours? Get them to keep an eye out and to get pics/number plates etc if you're not about.

I spoke to my neighbours son last night and he knew the car and knew what it was like and he understands. He is a bit of a dodgy lad (nice lad and handy to know though) though so he's getting his mates over tonight just in case they turn up. I have offered to pay them in beer for their time
When he told me last night that he'd been quoted that by a mate my immediate reaction was how? How can your mate quote that when he thinks it's a hydraulic tappet or something

The blokes probably bluffing anyway. Just inform the police of everything that has been said and as hard as it seems try not to worry yourself too much about it. Anyone can sound like a hard nut on a phone but its often a different situation in face to face encounters. Sounds like you've got it sorted with your neighbours too. Hope it all blows over and nothing happens.
You don't have any legal comeback on you either. When i bought my impreza that had just had an engine rebuild, it snapped a cambelt on the way home from picking it up. The bloke in this situation just told me to jog on and he didn't care. I found out the hard way that there is very little you can do when buying through a private sale.
You haven't done anything wrong so don't let anyone else make you feel like you owe them anything.

Tell him to send off the registration document as you have sent the bottom away and when he has received the document back you will consider purchasing the car based on depreciation, mileage and the additional owner. If you take the car back how do you know how many speed cameras he has set off in the two days ?
Best of luck.

You shouldn't have to go through this mate - this is feckin' terrible
if the police wont do out - then i'm sure you can get some hard case Scooby owners in your area to give you a hand.
Come on guys - get some geezers around Pauls gaff just in case.
If it happened to a Smacs membert i'd be round straight away!!!!
There is nowt worse than being picked on or fearing for your safety because some feckin' caveman wants to take it out on you.
Is there anyone that can help Paul????

Bad as it is, if they do come round, possibly all talk, then don't answer the door and call the police. Or the Wycombe Big Boy.

I suspect the thug in question here is all mouth and no trousers - but if he does turn up hit him with an Iron bar first - ask him if he was just after a receipt second .

Paul,
Sometimes you just have to watch your back....never make a sale without a receipt. You can refuse to sell the car if he refuses to sign on the dotted line. Some people really don’t care and personally I think the police will do jack all…(something you dn’t want to hear) but is the truth…
My advices get some friend / family members staying at your place for a while until this calm downs little. Maybe even get some people together and go see the git and sort this out..otherwise he will forever be threatening you and for as long as he thinks you will do nothing he will carry on! -
Other option is to post his name and address up and someone will know him surley…
ps: you need to only repost here...and i am sure many of us will turn up to help...

Do you know the address of this person? I assume you do (or police can get it) since you sent off the V5.
Next time he calls tell him the police have been informed and are aware of his threats / details
good luck

Hi everyone
Feeling much better now thanks. The police were at my house as I was on my way home from work. After a chat with them they decided to give this guy a call and advise him of the situation He apologised to the police and was shocked that I'd involved them. He said that it was one of his mates that called me earlier and not his cousin. He has said to them that he's not coming around to mine but after the day I've had I'm now at a local hotel trying to chill out.
Thanks everyone for your help, calls and vists (wycombe big boy ) I'll check in later after I've had a well earned beer
cheers.
