Are you sure it was a WRX PPP and not just a WRX with a fancy dan badge nicked from someone elses car ?.

Cos the extra weight of sticky badge will retard the ingintion enough to cause over run.

I would suggest less stickerage, its a weight to sadness ratio thing

parts on back order- then its a known warranty problem!!!

wait for the recall......

and wont be long before insurance companys refuse theft claims on cars with this barrel fitted!!!!

makes the tracker sytem a bit usless!!

spoke to subaru uk parts people this morning to try and give me a date. wait for it..............

august 10th!

that would make my car off the road for 1 whole month (£180 in insurance down the pan). that is if that date is correct and that the part is actually the fault on the car! I am fuming. I dnt have a car and car use my mothers for the next 6 days when she doesnt need it at a cost of £22 a week to insure!

well after speaking with subaru numerous times again, they have agreed to pay the costs of having the hire car on my policy rather than the hire car companys.

Thanks subaru. just get my parts to the dealer asap ffs!

Had this before with a different car, turned out to be dodgy barrel lock. How many keys do you have on your bunch.........

Always a good idea not to have a jailers worth of keys on your bunch.

well it continues. 3 weeks off road now. still no further. had battery fitted. new ignition barrel and now new imobiliser and still the same is happening. numerous technitions have looked at it and i though that after a technition from subaru themselves came to the dealer to inspect it would be over but the parts he orderd and fit made not difference. £200 and increasing in insurance wasted then....

Why the new battery?

Anyway, here's a thought on some ports of call:

If its not the barrel, Two other areas to investigate:

a) Alarm/immobilser: It's possible that a fault in this could send power from the permanent live to the switched live (providing the immobilser switches the ignition live). I noted it's been replaced, but has the wiring actaully been checked?

b) This is very rare, but I have seen it happen: do you have an aftermarket car radio/amps installed? If so, unplug/disconnect them all (including cd changer)...it has been known than an internal fault or bad wiring can re-route power from the permanent live, to the switch live and feed the ignition.

Finally, anything electrical that has been put on the car that is not original needs to have the wiring checked. It's usually a bodge that causes this kind of thing. It could be something as simple as a trim screw through 2 wires - I've seen dafter things happen.

the car is standard i have not alterd anything at all never mind electrical.

full description of what it started as. 3 months ago i started the car and it nearly never started. but it did after turing for 10 seconds it fired up. this happend again a couple of weeks later. i reported it and a new battery was orderd.

whilst battery was on order, one day i parked the car turned it off, took keys out and engine was still going. i reported this straigt away and no one at dealer had any idea nor anyone on the phone to subaru technical and was told to bring it back if problem persists and they would change bits trial and error style.

this happend again when i was due to go on holiday. this tim i got the engine to stop through revving the **** off it but all power was still on ie all dash lights as if the key was 3quaters turned. whilst like this i could not lock the car and if i tryed to start it it would turn and turn but not fire up.

I left the car for 10 mins but when i came back all the lights had gone out and car seemed normal. i tryed to stat it and it started first time. i turned off took keys out and the same happend. engine running. stalled it and all lights were on dash again so i shut the doors and left it. i peerd through the windows to see how long it took for the lights on the dash to go off ( i assumed they would) and all power in the car died after about 2-3 min (dash lights faded off slowerly) and the red light next to the clock came on (imobiliser light).

the car only fires up once the dash lights (as if key turned 3 quaters) have died off other wise it will just turn and turn and shake about.

just trying to give all the info i can recall sorry...

Seen this fault one a classic..it was a faulty column switch creating a back feed..crazy but true took the auto sparky ages to find.
The fault did not occur when the column switches unplugged..plug them in and it reappered..chnaged switch hey presto sorted.

Another area to check is the main ignition relay. I would guess any good technician would have checked this by now. But you never know.

spoke to the garage this morning. He said its been traced to the trackstar. something to do with the battery back up unit or something. anyway he said when he dis engadged it and bypassed it everything was normal. I dnt have a clue how it works but im taking his word for it and they will have a new unit in tuesday next week.

anyone care to elaberate on this as i dnt have a clue. all i know is the tracker is linked to the imobilliser and when i unlock the car and this 3quater turned key situation happens without even having the key in, the car will try to start but WILL NOT i repeat WILL NOT fire up.

I would have thought that when the tracker kicks in that no power what so ever would be available and you could not even get the engine turning to try and fire up???

Some trackers (depending on brand) have their own sealed 12v battery, this is maintained by a little split charger/isolation circuit. The ones I worked with were seperate to the tracker unit. This basically feeds power to the tracker battery and isolates it from the vehicle electrics so it doesn't allow current to flow back.

I have seen these short out on occasions, usually flattening the main car battery within a few days. I suppose it's possible for this charging/isolation circuit to short and allow current to flow from the tracker battery to the vehicle's electrics, once the main ignition relay is powered, it could then suck current from the main battery and cause all sorts of wierd and wonderful things.
