surely each to there own
i bought an STi because it has a big spoiler and gold wheels but in black not blue
i can see the point about a spec D but id go for the STi everytime
its not that comfortable as an everyday car but thats the sacrifice of buying something moves and handles well enough
... me thinks times change and the road testers get to test so much so often the goal posts move for them all the time

I'd say Spec D is poorly packaged and worst of all, so pricey.
A pre reg (essentially new) 05 WRX with PPP at £18k-£19k makes it look uncompetitive, plus buy discreet colour and ideally wagon and you have the Qcar thing, with real pace e.g. 4.8 seconds to 60.
I like Top Gear but they rubbish both my cars ( scoob and 350z) but I'm more than happy with the choices I've made.
I can't do wings and gold wheels at 36 but keep it discreet and I'd take a scooby any day over a hot hatch.
At the traffic lights a ppp'd wrx scoob, correctly launched, should deal with hot hatches.

Top Gear's still the best one to watch but I think JC's got a bit full of himself recently, it seems to be his show now rather than a group thing. I like all the presenters on Top Gear though.

He is a very arrogant man, but he's entertaining and makes me laff.

there's a distinct sense of embarrassment that comes with edging into the rush-hour gridlock

Sorry but bug eyes are ugly, thats probably why they don't have the selling power classics had. The bug eye wrx's look like big cars on skinny tyres, very off putting when looking at them from behind. I love classic's but i seriously can't ever see me owning or wanting to own a bug-eye, if i ever had that sort of cash i'd look at something prettier as well as quick.

I think the scoob is getting into to be a really niche car.. its not a Mondeo or Vectra or Passatt comfort wise, but its faster\better handling than all of them.. yet not quite on the Skyline\911\Evo\Elise level..its no fashionable poser car like the Boxster\350z... and hot hatches really are hot in the latest generation (ST,RS,MPS,GTi,R32).
Scoobs kind of a 'hot saloon', like the ITR.. bit of an outsider
Next generation of hot hatches? 4WD sub 6second to 60mph MINI SCOOBIES!

So everyones slagging off TopGear now because they dont really rate that Impreza?!!
Have people seen the 5th Gear review? (on their site) Thats more damming - describing it as a "thug mobile" or something along those lines. TopGear dont go that far, just that its embarrassing to be seen in, which many people would agree with.
Lets face it, the Impreza has had its day - but is still a great car if you want cheap performance, and dont care about image (or care about image, but are a chav)

I think these journo have finally smelt the coffee.
The impreza was overrated in its time, especially during the lull of cheap performance cars. They raved and ranted at how good it was and seemed to ignore every flaw the car has (and there are plenty).
Now there are alternatives, the Impreza's flaws, crude dynamics and ever tarnishing image show it up for what it is; A hum drum uninspiring jap box with a turbo strapped on and a tacky bodykit.
One drive in the Impreza GL (not available in the UK anymore ) even makes a Vauxhall Cavelier seem like a better driver's car
The Spec-D is a poor effort of trying to recreate the marque's original appeal 12 years ago, but it still sticks out like a sore thumb purely due to what it is - the common knowledge of who Subaru are (which 12 years ago was mostly unknown) and not to forget, its mish-mash looks.

I had a WRX PPP and struggled (In gear) against the BMW 535D.

Your 265bhp is not the be all and end all you know.
Your 4wd is a bonus off the line but in every other aspect of on road driving it is a hinderence.
All of the cars I mention would quite happily **** over you on a track or a reasonable section of hger majesty's finest tarmac.

A 535d is faster in gear than a WRX. Do not confuse this with a 530d.
A 535d is probably quicker, in gear than an STi.
Just because a car isn't loud, has vents scoops and sounds like a hoover being churned around a cement mixer doesn't mean that it is fast by default.

Dont confuse me with some chav boy racer but the current hot hatches may well have certainly moved the game on and Top gear may well slag imprezas off but they are still relatively cheap performance cars that are easily and cheaply modded and i love mine and would never take any of the current hot hatches over it any day of the week. Any car can be modded to similar performance levels to an STI including the hot hatches but that doesnt make the subaru a crap car now does it.
