Mike & the Mechanics "Looking back over my shoulder,I can see that look in your eye............" does that to me! It reminds me of playing it in a village pub's juke box and going back in time..............
Lovely song!Very nostalgic!

As in generally I tend not to find those particular genres appealing. But then, there is always the odd one that gets through. And of course there are some genres, and artists that classify their music as a certain genre where I would personally call it otherwise (eg, modern R&B )

I'm an alternate listener, so I have a natural habit going against the grain of what the commercial music charts dictate, just to find something that is different to the norm to feast my ears upon.
Fairy snuff The charts can still unearth the odd gem of a track e.g. Gnarles Berkley 'Crazy' which was IMO a good modern chart song, and even the naffest modern bands can surprise everyone with a great piece of music.

People are talking about music being emotive, which is true, but I can happily enjoy a tune I just find 'catchy', even if it does nothing for me on an emotinal level. For me it's actually more about the beat than the lyrics for some reason.

For me it's actually more about the beat than the lyrics for some reason.
And thereby hangs the source of great debate in our house.
I am like Jaimie... love that beat.

Whereas, t'other half knows so many lyrics it's scarey.

He "has a go" when I sing along using totally wrong words......but to me , its all about the beat and the rhythm. He knows the words to the most obscure songs.

its lyrics for me too, i like to understand what a song means...

its how those lyrics make me feel...

"The sea is whipping the sky, the sky is whipping the sea
You can hide away forever from the storm
But you'll never hide away from me"

My taste varies from quite grotesque Thrash/Rap (Rammstein/Slayer/Bolthrower/Slipknot/Bathory/Carcass through most metal to Beastie Boys/Limp Bizkit/Bloodhound Gang/Public Enemy/Ice T) then through Rock/Indy (Radiohead/Pearl Jam/Black Crowes/Live/Moby/Muse) followed by classical, and particularly mellow Jazz for relaxation. Can't be dealing with most dance music however or most pop formula dross (not that ALL the chart stuff is bad). Don't forget to chill out to some Pink Floyd or Hawkwind...

i guess it's not always the lyrics tho... take for instance Rammstein..... love their music... and the beat.. but aint got a clue what they're singing about... apart from Du hast miche ( sp?)( i know it say you hate me... and thats the only bit i do know!) don't understand German at all!

one tune/video that always sends a shiver up my spine is November Rain by Guns n Roses.... pure class !!!!! think it's the video that does that to me tho.
class solo in the middle by Slash !

It's both. Stuff like chemical brothers is purely the rythum and the beat. Whilst some Faithless stuff has more emphasis on the lyrics as well as the song, yet some of their stuff is teh otherway round (fantastic live btw : ).

Then there's stuff like Fleetwood mac and Pearl Jam that, although essentially rock, has more importance on lyrics than just thrashing a guitar for the hell of it.

As for Radiohead, not quite placed that one yet. Love them, but over-analysing the lyrics could send you mad.

Then there is Rap. Rap "should" imo be about the lyrics, as essentially that is what it is placed upon a rehashed looped back beat. But when so many wannabe hard men rap about the same ol' same ol' I'm 'ard, dis my bro' and I'll shoot you and steal yo hoes, it's no longer about the lyrics. Just image nothing more, thus my tendeancy not to listen to it. Stuff that breaks the mould I like - Eminen, OutKast, BEP (to some extent) is stuff I like. Thus I wouldn't even give 2cents my 2 pence. Although I'm partial to a bit of Cypress Hill now and again
