No, if you live in Britain, a democracy, you do what Mr Blair, and therefore the British people, tells you to do. Britain is broadly a supporter of Israel, not surprisingly since we created it after WW2 and are close allies with the US. If you are British and believe in our political values, then if Blair tells you to go and fight for Israel against the Palestinians, then that's what you do.

I think Israel did the right thing in going after Hezbollah, they have a right to defend themselves as anyone does. But, what they're doing now is dead wrong, they're just destroying a country and sending it back to the dark ages. I have a feeling that this situation will come back to bite them in future, and to some extrant they will have deserved it.

I think you're right. History has a sad habit of repeating itself in the Middle East. Basically no change for many hundreds of years.

To put things in context, this present spat is nothing compared to quite recent events, but our awareness is heightened by live media reports and the sensitive situation in Iraq. In 1982, many thousands died (estimate 17,000) when Israel invaded Lebanon to clear out the PLO. Bizarrely, Lebanese Christians were Israeli allies at the time and in the notorious events at Sabra and Shatila, somewhere betwen 1,000 and 3,000 Arab 'fighters' were slaughtered by the Lebanese Christians while the Israeli's looked on. The dead were supposed to be PLO militia, but in truth 95% were civilians.

A lot of people are now pointing a finger at Israel and saying enough is enough, but on the other hand, Hezbollah can stop the war tomorrow if it stops attacking Israel and disarms. Arguably, Hezbollah cares even less for Lebanese civilian life than Israel does. And the Lebanese people are still foolish enough to allow themselves to become a human shield for Hezbollah. No wonder they get killed.

It is the continued refusal of the Lebanese people to reject Hezbollah that has hardened Israeli resolve. If they won't throw them out, then Israel will see to it that Lebanon is reduced to rubble and its people will spend the next 20 years too busy rebuilding its infrastructure to have any resources left for war. Considering the amount of destruction Israel has created, the death toll is remarkably low.
