There are things I believe in but wouldn't say in writing or in public, because various laws say I can't. But it doesn't stop me thinking or believing them.

I stumbled across some figures a few days ago, but cannot find the damn link now. But basically it was a poll taken in both Lebanon and Israel shortly after the Lebanese elections in Feb 06, when Hamas swept to power. I can't remember the exact numbers, but was struct by the common view of both populations. Approx 75% of both sides wanted negotiated peace.

But if you google the subject now, the reverse is true. Figures vary, but generally 80-90% on both sides are in favour of continued military force from Israel and Hezbollah. Not surprising, but surely proof that whatever the outcome of the current conflict, it only hardens resolve on both sides

The fundamental instability of the Arab states and why it is important for The West to have a foothold.

In 1980, Iraq invaded Iran over ancient territorial rights. The war rumbled on for eight years, and resulted in an estimated 1m casualties, at a cost of $1.19 trillion. The west just stood by, apart from the US which gave some assistance to Iraq over fears that the newly radical Iran might get the upper hand. It seems that The West was quite happy for Arabs to kill Arabs, so long as the status quo was maintained, and oil supplies unaffected.

During the war, Iraq used chemical and biological weapons against Iran, and also most infamously against it’s own people, the Kurds.

Iraq then turned on Kuwait in 1990-91, a state carved out of Iraq by the British post the First WW. Again territorial rights were cited, but also the accusation that Kuwait was ‘slant drilling’ and stealing oil from Iraqi fields. There is a lot of oil in Kuwait and global supplies were under immediate threat, so…

There was immediate uproar from the UN, who dispatched a force from 30 member states (mostly US forces) and repulsed the Iraqis. They set fire to oil fields as they retreated, which burned for weeks. They also found time to launch scud missiles into Israel and only the strongest pressure from the US prevented Israel from entering the fray, which could have lit a fuse across all Arab nations. It is clear that the words ‘Israel/Jew’ are about the only thing that unites the Arab states with a common response (and it’s never a pleasant one). The word ‘America’ is also unpopular, and ‘Britain’ isn’t far behind.

Fears about Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq began to form. Parts were found from an alleged Iraqi Super Gun, capable of reaching Israel. After 9/11, we know how this ended up, and now the US (and British) ‘liberators’ in Iraq are in a horrific mess trying to establish law and order amongst warring religious groups that all want a (different) say in things, all stirred up by insurgents with links to Al Qaeda.

The Arab League represents over 20 Arab states, and about a dozen different religions. This organisation does not appear to exert any significant influence, and cannot agree within itself. Libya has resigned and rejoined several times.

Not a rosy outlook, is it?
