back to the original question
An import wrx can be had for somewhere near 16k, a uk sti can make you part with somewhere nearer 28k.
it is surely not worth 12k extra, for 12k you could get an engine built and have change for a built gearbox and **** over any sti you care to.

Are you shure about that I was speaking to a designer at AP Racing who was complaining that the new cars had changed to smaller bearings and he was expecting problems with the big brake set ups!!

I agree with that one

Went from a bog standard uk classic to a MY04 JDM STi and loving every minute of it, the cars are chalk and cheese

Agree 100%

And some classic imprezas might be faster, some newage wrx's might be faster, But the newage STI will turn heads nearly everywhere you go!

For example yesterday I was driving out of a very popular seaside town where property prices are on a par with London, I was driving my 03 STI all gleaming and shining and brubling along nicely through the ppp exhaust following an aston martin db7 And i would honestly say i had more admiring looks to my car than he did.................

If i had have been in a classic or a newage WRX would people have had the same reaction?

05 onwards have larger shafts, with an 8 ball CV cage instead of a 6 ball cage. The shaft splines are 2mm larger in diameter, and the wheels have a 114.5mm PCD instead of a 100mmPCD. It may well be the bearings are the same size, as the outer CV joint spline is the same size, they are not AFAIK smaller though.

Only because some people on this thread don't know what the hell they're talking about, I mean, dccd and water spray, "oh mine is now more "rally focused""

and then finally:

zen performance, I thank you

I wanted to see what peoples perception of the sti is, I think I found my answer, for those in the know, there is a world of difference, for those who have listened to too much pub talk, and not actually read through some of the threads on here, there's not much difference, but it goes better!

Thanks for all your responses guys, so as zen performance put it, there is quite a lot of difference between a wrx and an sti. Glad I bought one now

If they were looking at your car over the aston they wouldnt know the difference between an STI and a WRX anyway.

End of the day it comes down to what you want in a car. STI definately has more potential in the modding stakes but ive heard a lot of comments about the suspension being too harsh and gold wheels!! say no more. But maybe thats just jealosy.

Is the crank the same now as before I thought the wrx had a different crank to the sti (sti9), also I was told the spec of the short motor was same by a subaru mechanic the only difference he saw was the pistons and crank, the rods were the same.. not sure about the rod bolts new age.. not 05 onwards
