True the police are now reactive and will attend when a caravan has closed the M5 or A30 but will not enforce the many laws on towing trailers.

I think there should be some form of driving test that needs to be taken before you can tow a caravan. Some people seem to think that it's oh-so-easy when in fact it's not, and requires a bit more than common sense.

There does also need to be some way to restrict people from making stupid mistakes with regards to the car required to tow a caravan. No doubt some moron would try and tow a large caravan using a 1.3 Metro.

Never really seen the point of a caravan myself. I'd usually either take a tent or rent a cottage.

Markus - I absolutely agree that people should have to take an additional test before they can tow a caravan -James May may have been overacting, but manoevering those things is not at all easy. I've never had experience of caravans - but I have had experience of artics and it's a pretty similar principle.

As a kid I have very fond memories of holidays in static caravans - on small parks - not the vast caravan cities you seem to get nowadays. They had a proper loo attached to the van and a reasonable shower block on site.

I'm not a girl who wants (or needs) a lot of luxury, but I can tell you now that "emptying the excrement" does not feature ANYWHERE in my top 100 holiday must haves. In fact it wouldn't even feature in the top 1000!

I laughed along with everyone else but there is a serious side to everything, caravanning groups want the dangerous and slow outfits off the road just as much as other road users and the Police continue to do nothing.

I also agree with the driving test comments, the law was tightened up for people passing their test on or after Jan 1997 but it didn't go far enough and again the Police do not enforce it.

Caravanning is a life style choice and unless you go out every weekend it will be far cheaper to stop in hotels and cottages. You are looking at buying a large towcar, £10k-£30k for a new van, £500-£2000 a year insurance, servicing around £200 a year, all the extra kit and upto £30 a night to pitch.
For me my wife is disabled so stoppng in the caravan saves all the hasle of researching hotels, uncomfortable beds etc.etc. I can also take my bike or surf board with me soomething which many hotels do not allow.
And what do you do when you are there as Clarkson asked? Exactly the same as if you were in a Hotel in the same area.
As for the toilet , yeh it's not pleasant, using it is hardly any different from home, emptying it consits of pouring blue detergent smelling liquid down a stainless steel hole every few days.

I like Top Gear and Clarkson, but the show is due for a make-over. They're having to try too hard to shock/amuse, and the whole show is now over-contrived.

Even the 'spontaneous' arguments are obviously scripted.

Star in a crap car is sh!te.

That caravan farce was embarrassing. But credit to the fire brigade who were obviously standing by before Clarkson even lit the hob

It was a bbc stunt, so the fire brigade would be on site, the gas bottles removed from both caravans, exclusion zone setup etc. etc.
Clever editing but they probably used an electric single hob as the source of heat for the chip pan.
