This thread is comical .........
The guy who was talking about a track being the Impreza's natural stomping round, was he talking about a farm track, because he sure as hell cant of been talking about a race track. How many one make Subaru races do you see hmmmmmmmm
The 911's engine is in the wrong place for weight distribution but the 911 constantly wins the drivers car of the year awards, perhaps Subaru should consider putting the engine in the wrong place too?
Lets get it right fella's the Suabaru is one step up from a 182 clio, no more and no less, it is not a supercar or sports car like the 911, call it what you will. Alot of car for the money it maybe but badly lacking when its put to the test against more expensive machinery.
Of course someone will counter with lap times for a Subaru, what you dont see is that the Impreza does a few hot laps then skulks off home on a trailer with fooked brakes, whereas real cars arrive, drive (all day) and then drive home in the evening.
Just my 10 pennith worth

PS And I drive around a circuit all day and the brakes don't go off. The clutch mechanism squeaks a bit and there are a few more rattles but the brakes are fine (Pagid blues though )
PPS Those are track wheels on the front. I know Renault's build quality is rubbish, but it's not that bad.

Fairly interesting thread.
Having owned both marques my feelings are that point-to-point on the road the Impreza definately covered distance quicker but on track the Porsche definately has the upper hand, no doubt.

Most of us spend ****! loads of money at tuning companys trying to make our Impreza's handle and perform better, Most Porsche owners are more then happy with the way there standard cars perform with out having to spend more money getting the suspension set-up and sorting the brakes out. But with a price tag of £80k Id expect the car to be better then a Impreza, and to lose to a Porsche is nothing shameful!
Start worrying when those little hatchbacks with stripped out interiors come flying past you!

I should mention that I currently own an Impreza. Most fun I've had with a car yet

I think the reputation stems back to the early 90's, then an impreza really was cutting it with the likes of a 348, or 993. These makers have really stepped up the game though where the subaru's not much quicker than it ever was.
It doesn't take all that much though to get an impreza up to that sort of pace, you just don't get the comfort and refinement of an 80k car. Luckily the impreza is blessed with a very good starting point to set up the handling well.

I hate seeing the comments about how much more it costs etc just to have the same performance as a WRX etc.
For goodness sake, a Porsche is a premium brand and will always cost more than mass produced jap rubbish, even if its slower!
Subaru = Primark/Hoffmeister/Aldi
Porsche = Boss/Warsteiner/Waitrose

My point is that the porker is a race car for the road and the subaru is a rally car for the road. Cost aside, they are both derivitives from differing motorsports and to pitch a subaru against a porsche is an unfair comparision. Bring cost into the equasion and......

Well, let me put it this way, for road use, I never found my Std set up on an MY99 wanting.
The Pagids are better though! But, again, the difference is mainly in the resistance to fade and initial bite, NOT ultimate retardation.
I would be interested in seeing any figures that demonstrate any superiority of the big brake kits over the std set up in ultimate retardation or at least in tests representative of the conditions most scoobies are driven in i.e. not on a track!
My feeling is that for most people's useage, monster brakes have a relatively small advantage over the std set up (especially if aftermarket pads have been specified) and would only come into their own under severe use such as track work.
I stand to be corrected by figures if anyone has some?

I wonder. I reckon when the std brakes are in good condition you could get the abs kicking in at 60mph and keep it on all the way to stopped. Then it wouldn't matter what brakes you had you wouldn't be able to stop any better....
Only difference being the big ones could do that time and again. possibly the case..

Most Porsche owners are more then happy with the way there standard cars perform with out having to spend more money getting the suspension set-up and sorting the brakes out.
-Most Porsche owners aren't interested in this sort of stuff - they buy the image.
-Most Porsche owners tend to be older and have grown out of the modding thing, unless they are total enthusiasts.
-Huge difference between modding a £20,000 car and an £80,000 car
-Modding just isn't cool - especially for the Mayfair, Chelsea and Fulham Porsche owners.

Lets make another ill thought out generalisation:
- Most Subaru owners are chavs, who want a fast car as cheaply as possible
- Modding is cool, especially to most council house dwellers.

so you'r going to spend a few grand on making your scoob faster.
and your boss is a seasoned track day worrior, in a new porche.
mate to be honest don't even worry about. you won't even see him in you rear veiw mirror.
unless he laps you

Totally disagree with modded standard Porkers - how many boggo standard 996's do you see in the Autotrader/Pistonheads with GT3 kits/wings/wheels - quite a few i'd say.

GT3 kits and wheels is not going to make the Porsche any quicker round a track, Id love to see the scooby beat the Porsche, but his boss paid £80k for a reason.
