i have done well in sports and business post school, yet hated the whole "school winner" thing.

All we played at my school was f**tball, f**tball, and err, f**tball. I was crap at it, still am.
My attitude was, if I'm crap - why bother Caused some interesting flair ups between the PE tecahers and me...I abstained until they would do a sport that I had some hope in. i.e Cricket or Tennis. I wasn't bad at Rugby either...could floor those pansy football stars wannabes in our group with ease - sweet revenge

when I was in primary school we player rounders, we used a wooden bat with more splinters than the santa maria and a cricket ball! How many times did I get hit in the face, nuts or knees with this ball and have to sit off for the rest of the day !! and how many times do you think my mum came in to complain ??
Didnt even sue the school

Sports often give the kids who weren't that smart in the classroom the chance to be good at something. There will always be a few who're good at everything and a few that are good at nothing - but largely things balanced out.
Sports may also give people the chance to learn how to win without gloating - a lesson that those who missed all sports maybe didn't learn?

Its all madness. School is competitive without sportsday so having a non competitive sportsday is totally pointless.
In class its all about who's the toughest, who's got the best toys, who's got the trendiest clothes, who's in the school team for sports, who's top of the class, who's got the fittest mum etc etc...
So watering down sportsday into some namby pamby event wont stop the weak, the soft, the poor or the grossly obese being laughed at by their peers...

Children should be taught discipline, responsibility, and self control from an early age. All this business of letting them do as they want all the time is total rubbish and does them no favours for their future.
