That's it - look on the bright side

Well tonight put the hose in, squeeze the end and hold it above water so it makes lots of bubbles...... (being serious btw). Or can you re-arrange return pipe so that water splashes back into pond?

Have been adding a bit of fresh water in the morning and afternoon and dangling hose above water line to create bubbles but he still seems stressed.

The dead koi is in the wheelie bin and thank god its being collected today cos he's honking

So on the 18th you were told to get oxygen into the pond via various methods and it's now the 21st and you still haven't done it?

If you are serious about preventing your Koi from dying during exceptionally hot weather, then you need to be equally serious in your commitment towards taking action.

If it sounds harsh, it should do.

Hmmmm. The contact I gave would be happy to post to a work address or a neighbour and quickly. I am sure many main on-line suppliers - such as Bradshaws - would do the same although I am not sure about delivery times which is a key factor. dl

That excuse is as lame as your Koi, unfortunately.

18th or before, use phone, speak to person, delivered, fitted by now.

Getting deliveries at work is not an option. Just started a new job and don't think that would go down very well. so as much i love my fish i love the ££ from my job more.

I get the impression that she did nothing that was advised and just went on holiday to let the poor things die.

Yes i brought a pump the weekend before i left, and yes Root i did consider cancelling my hol that was booked 2months in advanced and losing £1000's so i could "save" my fish from dying in Britain's hottest summer since 1911. but instead i had a relative stay round the house to look after fish (and dog) so i guess **** like this just happens regardless of whether i was there or not.

pls don't buy any more fish if you care about animals as you're clearly not capable or have the facilities/time/money/common sense to look after them properly. if you don't care, why have them at all?

i take offence to your comments Gordo cos if i didn't have any common sense/ time and i didn't give a toss i wouldn't have bothered posting this thread. and money? I have spent a small fortune buying pumps/ filters/ UV lights/ anti chlorine/ algae killing products etc etc etc.

You'll need to be a bit careful if buying Koi at the moment because of this virus, KHV (Koi Herpes Virus). It is a killer and there is no way of telling if a fish has it, aside from a post mortem! But it only effects Koi. My local garden centre is still selling Koi and I know that some of them are infected as a mate lost his entire stock as a result of introducing a new fish from there. But I suppose if you have no others than you could take a chance but buy from a reputable place. Perhaps when hot spell is over. Try some long tailed Shubunkins (spelling?) as they are really pretty IMHO. Do use the best food you can find. dl

thanks David. Thinking about it maybe thats what killed my koi. I introduced 5 new koi's to the pond about 8 weeks ago and now i only have 1 koi left in the pond. None of the goldfish have died though so this may be it.

So you have actually lost 6 Koi in total. If it was the virus you will need to take advice on how and when you can introduce any new fish. I just don't know but obviously you don't want to put new fish in with a virus present. If I find out anything I will post but I am sure others may know? dl

Edit to include..... If, repeat if, it was the KH virus then I'm afraid you have quite a lot to do before you can safely restock which will probably include draining pond completely and drying everything out, including filter media. Even after that you can't be certain that you are buying disease free fish. Google has a mass of information - in fact too much and often contradictory. A sound information source is the UK's Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science, CEFAS.

One thought could be that once you have prepared your pond to keep an eye on the local paper as every now and again you will see people who want to find a home for their Koi and if this is old stock then it should be virus free. But again check on circumstances first. d

Sounds horribly like KHV or a similar pathogen, where did you get the new fish? do they have suitable quaranteen facilities etc?

Thanks to the high temps we are experiencing the now it is more possible for the adverse effects of KHV to become apparent.

IIRC KHV does not effect goldfish.

4 out of the 5 new ones died. Plus the 2 big ones (15"+) and 2 smaller ones which we had already = 8 dead. We've got 1 of the new koi's left and all our goldfish are fine.

Don't intend to get any more fish at the moment. But the place where we buy our fish seemed reputable enough. We get all our supplies from the same place and the guys in there are helpful and friendly. to be honest i didn't ask about the quarantine facilities. Guess if the virus can't be "seen" they most likely did not know their fish had it?

We've got a massive pond 3mx2mx 1.5m deep and it was cleaned and empty only a few month ago! another job for the boyfriend when he gets back then.....

KHV can hide basically until the temperature is right for it to appear (23-28 DegC) IIRC also it might not appear at these temps until some further stress is apparent, ie low oxygen content, also a fish may be a carrier of the virus but show no side effects, the only way to tell for sure is by blood testing.
If you have had an outbreak of KHV in your pond to only way to get rid of it is basically stripping everything down cleaning it through properly and destroying any filter media.

John.
