Get your geometry checked, and invest in decent tyres. My 00 was a bit tail happy, but that's because the geometry out of the box was so far off it was untrue. Geometry setup sorted this out and made it much more predictable.
I really can't stress enough the importance of decent tyres: the car will be loading up and relying on the tyres a massive amount to generate grip, and IMHO the roads are not the best place for a newbie to catch a slide when the rear breaks, especially at high speed.

I had a similar prob on mr old WRX, 3 brands of tyres, geometry was out and my misses actually spun it a couple times and she doesnt drive like me!
New set of Goodyear F1s and gemoetry checked (rear was way out) and she handled like a dream.
Saying that the new RA I got often powerslides when giving it some beans out of a junction or into/out of roundabouts, im guessing the short ratio g/box is helping in the dept..

Out of interest, my 05 wrx as standard would mainly understeer. Fitting rear solid droplinks and standard alignment check reduced this significantly then shortly after a rear ARB (22mm adj) eliminated virtually all remaining traces. Car was very neutral, easy to drift and controlled over steer via throttle.
Since had full AST's coilovers, front ARB and ALK (ie T25 kit ) and the car is much harder to get sideways, just sticks to the road albeit with plenty of tyre squeel.. Did however have to stiffen the rear ARB up to compensate for stiffer front end.
BTW I usually run AST's 9 (f) 7 (r) or 5 & 3 for long cruising/comfort (although I wouldn't say they're harsh at 12 & 12..!)
IMHO if you're after a good balanced setup on a newage that will transform the std handling, for the money, rear DL's and ARB with alignment check is very hard to beat (<£200)..

Oh my Gawd, what have i started !! - thanks for al the contributions !
I get the Prodrive springs and dealer geometry in two weeks, together with the Whiteline ARB and droplinks (and no, I'm not paying a dealer to fit those !)
Will keep the tyres for another 3 months and just take it easy in the wet ie like a 2WD car !! (will get Goodyear F1's then as i don't fancy my varied cheapies for a Scottish winter !).
Scoobie Ecosse ~ good moniker ! I live in Currie and drive a dark green 01 WRX. What year of wagon are you in? You may also have spotted my mate Stev in his blue/grey RB5 in the same area.
