What business to start with £250k?

And easy to extend with other value added services too - you could meet people at the airport and take their pets off them so there is no inconvenience when travelling.
Then meet them as they return.
I had a couple of dogs back in Australia and when you are off on holidays it was a real hassle driving out to the country to a kennels especially with everything else you do in a mad rush in those last few days before you leave.
As with almost anything basic services already exist but all you have to do in modern Britain today is wrap it up with a corporate face, market it as a luxury and you'll be rich.

KiwiGTi - not a bad idea but maybe not best suited to a new mum .
Maybe a website that allows like minded cat owners to share looking after each others pets is the way to go

Thanks for all the comments so far.
TB, its not my total savings. It doesn't include significant share options that are worth that amount again. Even if it was my total savings I don't think its madness to invest it all. I know people who started their set ups with all their savings + remortgage + borrowed from family. It depends how sure you about your idea. Its a gamble, but thats how money is made. imho.
The pet thing is not for me. Its not something I could be passionate about, and I'm sure something like that already exists.
Rannoch, what does your set up do?

[QUOTE=The Snug Rhino]because no business owner in their right mind would start one if the only way he could figure out what to do was to ask someone else.
Its just one very small way of researching. Chips comments on franchises were very helpful as I'd never really thought of that. Well I had but thought (maybe wrongly) that they were a rip off
If you read my original post you'll see that its really a sideline I'm after, mainly for the wife. I would only join if it suddenly flew. I'm not trying to be the next Rich Branson and hence asking for ideas is actually not that unreasonable. I'm not quite sure what makes you guys think that just because I've posed the question that means I automatically lack any chance of being successful.
If someone came on here and said eg should I retrain as a 'x'. Would that mean he could never be succesful as a 'x' because he dared to ask the question?
I was hoping to get responses from people who may run their own businesses on here and that might spark something in my imagination. Instead I get people like you, who I presume don't run their own business talking ****e
I thought you were some kind of IFA, I must have got it wrong. Please correct me what do you do? I only ask as I'd like to know how qualified you are to comment so authoratively on the matter

I am an IFA - i place investments in trust for IHT planning. i do this via my own company, i make a lot of money.....and i never asked anyone what line of work i should be in.
research your chosen field by all means...but finding a job by asking others should be limited to 6th formers.

I think your best bet maybe to become a business angel and invest lots of smaller amounts in start-ups/new businesses and take an equity stake. You wont need to put in lots (my last company got seed funding from 2 millionaires who put in 20k each initially). You will be able to get a larger slice of the pie dealing with start-ups (riskier, yes) than established businesses and wont have all your eggs in one basket.
Franchises, avoid like the plague they should be outlawed in my opinion and if you like I'll post a link to a post I made on UK business forums that give numerous reasons why they should be avoided. On that same forum you will find numerous disgruntled franchisees too.

Got any dentist friends? Find one with experience but who is still working as an associate. Set up a new practice in partnership. You fund the premises and equipment and use your business skills to establish a quality private clinic with space for 3 or 4 surgeries. Once you are well established work a double shift system and open from 8 to 8 and Saturday mornings. The money will roll in and you and partner take around 45 - 50% of associate dentists' fees. Many dentists haven't a clue about business and what a modern premises should look like and don't have a clue about decent marketing aside from "word of mouth" if you'll excuse the pun. You could even open as an NHS practice and be prepared for long queues dl

theres a bloke near us delivers lager, wine, spirits, cigarettes to your door 24/7
so when you run out at your bbq or party or just home from the pub you give him a ring he drops it off ..double the price plus £2 delivery..i kid you not £25 for a tray of lager that costs £12 in asda
and hes run off his feet
probably not for this poster but a good little business all the same

Gary, I have considered that before, especially after watching the dragons den! Problem is though I think one should have run at least one business before being a vc. I'm not qualified for the role.
I'm interested in your views on franchises though as that was always my assumption. Do you think there are exceptions though ie McDonalds etc (before the health concerns)
Paul, thats not a bad idea (Raffling cars) Obviously there are already things like best of the best, but they only do cars. No reason why you couldn't do boats or appeal to the female pound with whatever they are into
Audilover, not quite sure what thats all about
David, yes I do have dentist friends. Its not quite as easy as you make out. Fees structures have been squeezed for them on the NHS and the private side is very competitive. The British don't like to spend money on teeth in quite the same way as for example the americans do.
Thanks for all the opinions so far. Its good to see the debate has moved on from just calling me an idiot for asking the question

im not a buisness man but i am a father and all i can say is if you can afford to do something that will mean spending more time with your child than do it because the rewards are greater.

'Investing in one of those russian run farms in kazagkstan where rich business men from all over the world come to act out theyre fantasies with the animals'
spot on audilover....as you become older and richer you lose the inhibitions and sharing a bed with a urangatang is second nature rich men will pay a lot to suckle the udder of the white rhino
'David, yes I do have dentist friends'
there lies the problem...someone coming onto scoobynet openly admitting to that and asking for financial advice off keyboard cowboys...it just doesnt add up
are you really considering any of these ideas????
you are going to invest your 500k net in paulwrxboro's glorified pizza delivery boy idea
it is just a clever way to tell the average scoobynetter how much you are worth
Lord Shrek.....taking on those that have and those that come up with crap business ideas

Here you go my post is the third one down, that wasnt an exhaustive list but I think franchises are con jobs, yes there are exceptions, Maccys, Snap-on are about the only two that spring to mind. Hey you can spend £7K on an oven clean franchise or buy a couple of packs of mr muscle oven clean and cloths and spend the remaining £6995 on marketing!
As above you need to find something you have a real interest/passion for as that is always a good start for a business.
Good luck
Gary

What doesn't add up about me knowing some dentists?
When did the £250k become £500k?
I still can't figure out for the life of me what pleasure you think I'd get from giving some indication of my worth to people who have no idea who I am Maybe you would get turned on by this sort of thing but I do not. There are many on this bbs that are worth alot more than me. If you go onto pistonheads you'll see guys worth millions upon millions, guessing from the fact they run £250ks worth of cars anyway. Its no big deal really but you seem to be making it into one. I'm hardly going to appear in the Times richest 250 list am I?
You may laugh at Pauls idea, and his exact idea is not something I would follow but there is a general theme there ie delivery of items at premium for impulse/conveniance buying that is sound. Its actually one that people have made millions from.
I think you are scoobynets newest and biggest keyboard cowboy:i
