Neil,
What time did you get in the end down the 1/4?
Regarding the handling, when I looked at the final times I was about 2/3rds down the list out of all cars.
So I didnt come last, which is the main thing!
Did you better your 40.9secs?
Regards,
Shaun.

nah i didnt beat that time, only got 4 of my 5 runs as well which was annoying. I think it was a case on runs 3 & 4 of trying too hard, but tbh i was having too much fun! Ive never had the car step out so much before so i was lapping it up
I think that i was 22nd overall out of around 60-65 that had times, so i think that was good given the moderate power (and definitely the lowest power 4wd car in TOTB), was good enough to beat rocket ronnie on the circuit though![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
With regards to the 1/4, i only got 1 "recorded" run, which was a rather bad 13.49 @ 100!!!
I did a further run but unknown to me they had stopped recording times (i went against Pavlo for a laugh) and i think it was a fair bit quicker, but only around 13 flat id say. Im going to time it via the incar video to get a rough idea.
Videos to follow later tonight!

actually thinking about it, John Stevensons car is a private car.....although Andy has done a lot of great work making it that quick....
it recorded 10.99 on his first ever go at the 1/4 and 38.3 on the handling.
10.99 is pretty rapid for a hill climb car!!!!

It sure was a fun day.... even if it was hard work! ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
It's the taking part that counts (lol) and even being able to compete at this kind of level is an achievement in my book.
More importantly I was glad my car went back from another event without any issues or running problems!![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Regards,
Shaun.

Cheers Neil, car is built by me with mapping by Andy.F, I ended up 7th overall on the handling, had two timed runs, was going back for the other 3 when the queue bit me in the bum and ran out of time, pretting sure I could have bettered my time.
1/4 mile time quite chuffed with, that was with a lift, 100metres from the end because of a small 'incident'.

Cheers for the support Guys
Just sorry I couldn't keep the car running all day.
Unfortunately, reliability is always going to be an issue at these events as we try and push the tuning boundarys forward even further.
Many of the top cars had major issues.
Keith Cowie
Simon Norris
Roger Clark Motorsport
Ron Kidell
Calder Supra
all broke something that stopped them finishing the event.
As yet, there are no proven solutions for an 8 second manual gearbox subaru, even continually running one in the mid 9's is becoming quite a chore !
My day got off to a promising start with a 'warm-up' run down the full track on my std roadgoing Toyo T1R tyres, these were high profile tyres to assist with increasing the gearing for the top speed run. I had them pumped up hard, so launched the car off the line fairly easily (to avoid overheating the tyres) and then set off down the strip. Something on the gauges however caught my eye and caused me to abort the high speed run before reaching the end of the measured mile. When I got back I was well pleased to find I had run a 9.85 @ 171 MPH ! The top speed i knew wasn't going to be too good but the results don't get back to the start line for an hour or so.
Whilst waiting to hear the speed, I decided to get the drag tyres on for a proper drag run. As we have had drivetrain issues recently I decided a cautious approach was required so early in the meeting and therefore avoided 'flat-shifting' on this run. My change into 2nd gear was a bit slow and it bogged slightly but then rest of the run was drama free, the result was 9.51 @ 169 MPH
backing up the previous speed that nobody had believed
the drag tyres were helping with the launch but causing a bit more top end rolling drag than the hard Toyos.
With a good 1/4m result in the bag and something somewhere over 171 mph on the top speed it was time to go for the handling.
We had spent considerable time setting the car up for the handling circuit, with a new set of anti roll bars, custom springs, adjustable rear links and full geometry set up for a tight circuit. The wheel cambers were set as a compromise to drag racing in order to allow a quick changeover to the handling circuit. We also had a tasty new set of tyres just for the job![Cool](images/smilies/cool.gif)
One look at the queue for the handling circuit however changed that plan, it was backed up half way down the pit road and hardly moving![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Plan B, go for a few more 1/4 mile runs and give it a bit more "beans"
with a little sniff of Nitrous. The 50bhp jets were fitted and off we went. My pit crew had gone AWOL with the intercooler chilling spray so the run started with a hotter than ideal intercooler. The launch was good with a 1.553 setting the fastest 60' time of the day ![Cool](images/smilies/cool.gif)
it was pulling really well, shift into 2nd was timed just right (for a change) and then the 2-3 was also swift and it pulled very hard again in 3rd. This was going to be a good un I thought......until......pop goes the Plenum
This had happened once before and I recognised it immediately as the power dies but the car continues to run on when you shut the throttle (due to big open hole in the plenum chamber) I dipped the clutch, killed the ignition and coasted the remainder of the track going F*** F*** F***
The custom plenum we run is an alloy fabrication and is one of the few things I can't do in-house, the welds had not been done properly and under the pressure/temperature they failed allowing the plenum to split wide open, losing all boost pressure.
End of play for me and it was barely noon![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
After the long walk back to the pits I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I heard what my time was.... 9.79@109mph..... what would that have been with 4th gear included !
"If this" and "but that" lol.... we can all butter up bad figures but this really was the one that got away !
Anyway I can't complain, even after only two qualifying runs we ended up with the fastest 1/4 m of the day and I think it was the 5th fastest top speed even though it was an aborted run ! This placed us 3rd overall. Same placing as we had at TOTB 3. Just gutted that I didn't get a chance to run on the handling circuit.
The other Subaru team guys had some good runs too, gaining team points in the other 2 disciplines. Mark/Steven set a cracking top speed of 194.? which is a brilliant result over 1 mile, if in any doubt just check out what some so called supercars achieve in 1 mile !
John Stevenson scored points in the handling and also ran a 10.99 on the 1/4 at his first ever attempt.
Matt Clark also scored some handling points in the RCMS car I believe before something broke on a 1/4 mile run, sidelining the car for the rest of the meeting.
Gully ran low 10's and Pavlo ran a PB of 9.89 IIRC![Cool](images/smilies/cool.gif)
Mikee ran out of setup time and was running his new engine on low boost for the event (watch this one in future !!)
David had a few electrical issues to start with but did get a few runs in later in the day.
Neil and Joe ran well and I'm sure it will have given them both a taste for the future (beware of the slippery tuning slope !)
In summary, we were certainly robbed of that one point![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Well done to everyone, the commitment shown by all the team was nothing short of brilliant. Again, thanks to Steven and Emma for sorting things out like the t-shirts, and to the organisers - the traffic was a **lot** better handled this year, and the grandstands were better, the toilets were better, the ice creams were fairly reasonable
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
All in all, a great event. Even alexander (my 2 year old son) really enjoyed it

Fantastic effort Andy real shame the car let go,
Thanks for posting the info mate I was there but hearing you post your version of events makes for great reading.
I really hope you get it together mate I think you have quicker times to come and hope these setbacks do not effect your future efforts.
Well done to all involved for a great day and I for one see the work involved in just prepping quick road cars you guys are in a different league .
Top effort and reckon next year could be very interesting.
On a seperate note Andy are you planning any future ventures south have a couple of cars i would you to look at?Let me know if you are able to offer your talent

Got to agree on that one Andy. It would have to have been in the 8 sec bracket if you coasted over the line @ 109 mph in 9.79 secs some 60 odd mph down on speed over a previous run. I could not believe it when I seen your car on the trailer going no where for the second year running, I thought everything would be fine for more runs! The fastest car at totb goes to you though

Andy F = LEGEND in the making!
You will get into the 8's (no doubt
) and TOTB 5 belonged to you - shame about the outcome in the end!
171mph in qtr of a mile
!
There's too many cars out there to mention that should make you so uncompetative because of what has been spent on them - but not the case! Shame we didn't see more of you - when you launch the car it looks in another league! Shame you can't see how cool it looks from the side-lines yourself!
When will you next run? Would love to be there when you do make the 8's!

Recently ran 9.3 @ 160 at santa pod and we have since done some more tuning, fitted an intercooler and changed fuel away from 100% methanol as the GTR guys wanted it banned for totb

Elvington will always show higher speeds than the pod due to the way they both measure it, pod measure over a distance prior to the line, Elvington measure right on the line. Probably about 5% difference in it.
Not sure where the next run is for the car, in the short term I really need to get on with some work, answer all my emails and pick up phone calls instead of developing or racing the car.
Probably run again in 3-4 weeks......... unless I get withdrawal symptoms before that
