Audi lover "a good driver in a golf would xxxx on you"
aaaaaah really ..... take a golf to Castle combe and see if you can beat my lap time at 1 min 24 ,timed on my last visit with this forum a couple of months ago ,i will be mighty impressed if you can get within 3 seconds of that time.I assume the more educated on here will realise what that time means.
infact bring a golf gti to the next one in september and i will personally xxxx on you without breaking sweat

Castle Combe is quite a twisty circuit so handling and braking woudl favour outright power.
I'm sure a certain Tiff would take you up on your offer

Driving ability aside I find the comments about the Golf V being of 'good quality' laughable.
The car is not of 'good quality', it's adequate and hardly better than a Ford. VW has lost the plot when it comes to quality. The car is nothing like as good as the MKIV.
Shame VW decided to save money.
Nobody mentioned the faults with the steering that VW are unable to offer fixes for.
Lots of unhappy owners here in the MKV section

The last real quality golf was the Mark 3. Pile of ****e otherwise, but the quality of materials was very, very good. Even the mark 4 was more perceived quality than actual with its soft touch materials and fancy backlit dials.
Gotta admire the VW marketing machine though, eventually people believe all the hype.

my mkiv v6 4 mo was....
built like a turd, went back to the dealers 12 times in 2 years then I sold the sack of ****e. It broke down 3 times in that period and after 2 years I assume its still going wrong now. Everything seemed to go wrong from track rod ends, rear boot locks, rad fans, trim, head lights etc etc etc.
Test drove a mk5 gti last week and although nothing wrong with the car was shocked at the build, it was already rattling like a goodun and the interior felt like a real step down in quality.

A lot of conflicting comments of ownership here - to be honest a few rattles or issues over build quality would not bother me - after all i own a Subaru

I said the (build) quality was the best, but the car itself was a pile of ****e otherwise.
As for the mk4, ask any fleet manager about "quality" and see what answer you get...

I've had 2 MK2's, a Mkiv and they have all caused me loads of problems, the mkiv I had chipped at 60k miles and by 68k the clutch went. I only increased the power by a little bit. Build quality was very poor. Can't beat the japs.

the above is correct to a point. Mine had a few track options, most notable the ao48r's I was running and round a short track no hot hatch would come near it. However the ring is a very different place and I'm afraid power and aerodynamics play a huge part. The caterham could only pull 120 max at the ring my e46 m3 pulls 150 in the faster sections....combined with better knowledge I have of the place now, by the end of a lap my caterham would of been slower. Saying that a superlight R, radical etc would slay everything inc of the local porkers

probably why a lot of race schools use them - though no matter i'm not a big fan of Rovers and i'm sure one woudln't trouble my Modded Classic - unless a it was a very twisty track with a capable driver (i'm sh*t)
as for cater-westy-tiger-thingymabobs - agreed power to weight and all that.
a buddy at work drives a Dax Rush V8 - he has let me drive it from time to time - accerleraton wise and cornering My Scoob woudl not see which way it went

when i point it out to people they laugh at me for being so ****.
But its just bloody anoying on a new car and shouldnt be there.
On the plus side
i think its quick enough.
its comfortable
makes a nice 'farty' noise
i can get 40mpg out of it.
handles well.
looks the part, esp in retro
