well I wasn't a Billy no mates and I was doing very well thank you, when I upped sticks and moved down under! I still have my circle of friends in the UK, they come over here for holidays every now and then and I've been back to the UK.

Anyone coming over expecting cheap house prices...forget it, unless you want to live out in the crappy burbs.

Miss the pub - YES
Miss the friends - yes
Miss having access to Europe - You betcha
Miss the chavs and the general degradation of British Society - Absolutely not!!!
Miss the expense of living in the UK- hahahahaha...no!
Miss the Brit humour - Yes.

We've already gone! Japan for the next couple of years (Hubby on contract).

We originally left the UK (south) in 03 for a year in France, Then went back to the UK and moved up north (cheaper property & hubby is from the north)

Did a year before we got naffed off with it all again and looked for a job abroad, Japan seemed like the obvious choice cos we lived here for a bit 6 years ago.

So here we are, loving every second of being in Japan. There is no crime (I mean theft etc) I can leave the house & car unlocked and never even worry. Most people when they go shopping leave the car running! There are no chavs of any form. No groups of kids with nowt to do stood on street corners. The kids here are at school for 8am til 7pm including Saturdays, they don't have time to **** about!

When lads tinker with their cars in Japan, they tend to do it properly on Nissan Silvia's, Skylines and most probably have 400bhp - not ****e Max power Saxo's and the likes! Although they do have 'Car dress up' clubs

Here we're called 'Gaijin' (foreigner) but we're totally accepted as we try very hard to speak Japanese and live by Japanese standards. We're a bit of a novalty and we get stared at loads, especially our blonde 4 year old son - It's like being celebs!

There is so little I miss about the UK, I can't even say family, as my parents live in France & Sister in law lives in Spain.

House prices in the UK are just plain scary, along with the cost of fuel etc The NHS is a joke and then there's Blair but that's a whole different subject!

Who knows where we'll go next, but I doubt very much we'll come back to the UK for good when there are so many other lovely places to live!

Ok, you can wake up now

Well goodbye then. I'll give you a lift to the airport if you'd like.

As for those "Quality of Life" surveys, what a load of crap. What exactly is the criteria? Vancouver has rubbish weather most of the year and if my visit there is anything to go by, holds the world record for number of homeless people wandering the streets. What about people who don't live Lonon but in the UK countryside or anywhere else? Is their quality of life worse than someone in some dreary Aussie suburb? I think not. Who did they ask about how great Sydney is? Aussies? No biased answers there then. Believe those surveys and you'll believe anything.

Indeed. Intelligent and adaptable people can make a success of it anywhere that they choose. From all the countries I've visited and lived in, the UK really is chav central - I've no idea why other countries don't have the same problem with uneducated and violent mongs that Britain does . These are the children of Thatcher's selfish Britain that we are seeing now as young adults and proof that pure capitalist policies simply do not work.

There's more homeless people/down and outs in Lincoln city centre than there is Vancouver.

At least it has proper weather, not the chnageable drizzly climate the UK has to endure. Where 1mm of snow grinds a city to a halt

A mate of mine and his wife moved to Melbourne (well 1hr oustide in the countryside) 4 yrs ago and say it's the best thing they ever did. They're constantly trying to get me to move out there too (no ties in the UK apart from my job). I went out for a month at Christmas and it was stunning, the cost of living is much lower and it generally seems a lot "nicer" than the UK, peopel much friendlier etc. I'm seriously considering it, i have the first part of my visa application done already.

Also if Sydney is your only experience of Australia then you have missed a lot. The difference between Sydney and Melbourne is like the difference between NY and LA.

There's a real tendancy for Londoners to equate London and England as the same thing. From my experience, if you exclude big cities, the pace of life slows down the further form London you go. It's ludicrous to say you'd leave the country as the pace of life is too fast. Yes people do rush around too much these days, and have little time for othere, but that's personal choice. You devide how much you fit into your life, and how desperate you are to earn as much as possible.

I drove through a village just south of Knockhill a couple of years ago. It was 9 am on a Friday. tHe farmer I was with complained that it was gridlock, as there must have been nearly 4 cars waiting at the lights. I can drive 30 miles to the coast quicker than 6 miles across York. It's all relative.

I agree there's a huge attitude problem in the UK, that's what hacks me off. So many people won't take responsibility for themselves. Parents suing schools when little Jonny grazes his knee says a lot IMO.
However, over-taxed as we are, the UK does on the whole look after people very well. I'm sure many older people would disagree, and many scroungers take advantage. My daughter will need looking after all her life. There are few countries where that can happen without me having to earn 6 figures (which I never will).
Mind you, my ideal would be a country / community where having a learning disability didn't matter, because people could be bothered to look after each other anyway, and didn't discriminate.

As for the original post, that 54% is utter rubbish. But then 79.4% of statistic are aren't they?!

They do have pubs/bars in Oz, not really the same atmosphere as in the UK though. I'm not a fan of pubbing/clubbing in the UK though, so that's one aspect of british life I definately wouldn't miss. Drinking culture is totally different there, from what I've seen they drink to socialise rather than with the sole purpose of getting hammered and starting a fight*.

* Though there are places where that happens too, just not every bar.

Sounds ideal .................................... are you looking for a lodger ?

Makes you wonder reading your post why Japan has some of the biggest global companies. Now have the largest car companies in the world. Sounds like it's all down to how they are brought up. Try getting kids in the UK to go to school on a Saturday, let alone any day that starts at 8am til 7pm. No, our lay about little ***** would rather sit on there overweight backsides playing on their Playstation (Japanese company) or go out drinking on the streets nicking cars or vandalizing/robbing/mugging etc, etc.

Watched 5th Gear a few week ago about the tuning scene out there, and all cars were immaculate, and like you say, nothing like the Max Powered saxo's we see being driven around by Chav's.

You do right not wanting to live back here. If I left (Please let me leave) I certainly wouldn't want to come back.

So, what about it then, do you want a lodger ?????

I moved to Canada several years ago, but am now back in the UK.

If there are things about whatever country you are in that annoy you enough to leave, you are likely setting yourself up for disappointment. You will just get annoyed at a different set of things in the new country.

Toronto, for instance, has very harsh winters and very hot humid summers. I've not met anyone who likes both extremes. The cost of living is similar to the UK if you want the same lifestyle that you had in the UK. Looking for work has many issues not found in the UK. Many qualifications are not recognized etc. I could go on.

My point is, move abroad because you want to live in that country, rather than just because you don't like the one you are in. Also make several visits to the country you want to live in before you even begin planning a move. Find out for yourself what the country is like and do lots of research, and then do some more research.

I'd still be living in Canada if it wasn't for the difficulty in getting well paid work (even in IT).

Stilover,

If you're living in Darlo - no wonder you can't wait to get out

We were living in Newton Aycliffe until 2 months ago - No prizes for guessing why we're now in Japan!!

Years ago mate, years ago...

And I'd still love to see all those who claim that the smelly foreigners who come to the UK should do how the UK does and support it, or get out... love to see what happens when they emigrate...

Apperently the main reasons that those interviewed want to live abroad is because of 'the wevva'.

Good to see they have really thought it through then.

Sort of, but there are many kinds of immigrants.

I doubt anyone would argue against hardworking families that come here for a better life, against Filipino nurses, South African doctors or teachers, European restaurant and bar staff etc.

However I think many people find the other type of immigrants quite distasteful. The illegal ones, the ones that sponge, that never integrate, that hang around in groups in the street, that form criminal gangs etc, or those that have cultures or opinions radically different from the UK (eg: Muslims wanting Sharia law)

Maybe much of it is an excuse or it is overplayed by the media but it is also another example of how a rotten egg can spoil the whole basket.

You might have a town with a large multicultural population that get on well but all you need is a dozen or so of the undesrirable ones and they affect the whole community.

e-claire,

Who do you work for if you don't mind me asking? My wife and I used an agency in Edinburgh recently for our PR application to NZIS and I was wondering if it's the same people.

We used Visa-Go
